1998 dodge grand caravan will start, but sputters and dies. for a few months now, when it is cold, it will start fine, but if I have several stops to make, it almost sounded like it wouldn't start. Like it would almost "hiccup", and then start. Sometimes it wouldn't start on the first turn, but then it would start fine on the second. This week, it started sputtering at low speeds, like when coming to a stop. If I feathered the gas pedal, it would stay running. It finally stopped while pulling into a parking lot. I can turn the key and it will start, but then immediately sputter and die. If I step on the gas while turning the key, I can get it to run (rough), but it does eventually sputter and die a second or two after taking my foot off of the gas. No "check engine" light. Any guesses? Where to start?

The BCM (body control module) is the problem, have it replaced, this is a common issue on your van.

When you try to start it back up, have you tried very slightly pressing on the accelerator and trying to start it? If it does start, but dies as soon as you let up on the pedal, dollars to donuts the IAC (idle air control) passageway is blocked or the IAC motor is bad (should throw out a check engine light though).

Dear anew32, Wed 2-11-2009 3:43am EST (USA)

Do you often run your gas tank to near empty?
If so.......
This sounds like it may be as simple as cleaning the water or gunk out of the gas tank which is what I always do 1st because it's easy and inexpensive.
If your fuel is contaminated with gunk, grime, water and/or bottom junk like rust this will cause stalling and rough riding!
Try spraying a can of starter fluid in the air intake and see if it runs! If it does, it's most likely bad fuel or clogged injectors so....
Fill the tank with High Test, Add some dry gas and a good fuel system cleaner or 2 or 3 and this should dissolve all the gunk and clean the injectors! Read & follow the cans' instruction carefully.
If this cures the problem never let your gas tank get below 1/4 and especially never run it to empty as this is when the gunk and/or water will enter the system!
Hope this helps!
Good Luck!

My 1998 dodge caravan while driving it jerks then dies but starts right back up but it y does it when it is hot outside does not do it in the cold months

Hi Kelly, im glad to help!

Kelly, there are so many things that can cause your vehicle to jerk during hot weather. The first thing to do is go the autozone and have them check it for codes then post the codes back here then I\'ll try to help you farther. Here\'s why! This could be an electrical issue, a fuel related issue, a computer issue an much more. I want to help you so post your codes here and we will work together to try and find your issue. hope this helps and have an awesome day Kelly.

For 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan, instrument clusters with light when ignition turn on, but there's no crank and no start. Battery just changed five months ago

I have a similar problem. Do you also notice the gauges on the instrument panel going out from time to time? (Have to slap the dashboard.) I have been told the start problem is related to a problem with the instrument panel (a control unit contained therein). I have found at times turning the key to the ON position for a few seconds (odometer lights stabilize) before moving to the START position sometimes helps.

Unfortunately, replacing the instrument cluster/control unit can cost up to $600-700. I am not a mechanic, but have inquired about this for my own Caravan. Good luck.

When cold car will start and idle rough and sputter takes a while to run normal will do it when warm also check eng lite came on and went off code 41 stored 95 dodge grand caravan 3.3

have the fuel pressure checked when starting cold, also have them do a fuel pressure leak down test, this test requires a special test gauge, if you are going to do the test buy the gauge, about $40
