TIMING CHAIN, REPLACE Caution: With the timing chain removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact. 1. Disconnect and isolate battery ground cable. 2. Drain coolant into suitable container. 3. Remove accessory drive belt. 4. Remove front cover as follows: a. Remove coolant reservoir or surge tank. b. Attach engine support tool Nos. J-28467-360 and J-28467-400, or equivalents, onto alternator stud-ended bolt. c. Remove front cover upper mounting screws. d. Remove engine mount and bracket adapter. Discard adapter bolts. e. Raise and support vehicle with jack stands. f. Remove righthand front wheel and tire assembly, then the righthand splash shield. g. Hold balancer in position using harmonic balancer GM tool No. J-38122, or equivalent, remove mounting bolt and balancer using puller GM tool No. J-24420-C, or equivalent. h. Remove front cover lower mounting bolt. i. Lower vehicle. j. Remove front cover and gaskets. 5. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until camshaft sprocket timing dowel pin holes line up with timing chain housing holes, Fig. 1. 6. Remove timing chain guides. 7. Raise and support vehicle with jack stands. 8. Ensure timing chain slack is above tensioner, then remove tensioner, Fig. 2. 9. Disconnect timing chain from tensioner shoe grooves and remove shoe using suitable screwdriver under timing chain while pulling shoe outward. 10. If removing tensioner shoe is difficult, proceed as follows: a. Lower vehicle. b. Hold intake camshaft sprocket in position with camshaft sprocket wrench GM tool No. J-39579, or equivalent. c. Remove sprocket bolt and washer. d. Remove washer and install bolt into camshaft by hand. e. Position suitable three-jaw puller into intake camshaft sprocket relief holes and remove sprocket. Do not pry on camshaft sprocket as damage to sprocket or timing chain housing may result. 11. Remove mounting bolts and tensioner. Caution: Tensioner is spring loaded. 12. Mark timing chain and crankshaft sprocket for installation. 13. Remove timing chain. 14. Apply adhesive sealant compound GM part No. 12345493, or equivalent, on camshaft sprocket bolt. 15. Hold camshaft sprocket in position with camshaft sprocket GM tool No. J-39579, or equivalent, then tighten mounting bolt and washer. 16. Position camshafts using camshaft sprocket timing alignment pin tools No. J-36800, or equivalent, through camshaft sprockets' into timing chain housing holes, Fig. 1. 17. If camshafts are out of position and must be rotated more than 1/8 turn, proceed as follows: a. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to 90° off TDC. b. Position camshafts and install dowels. c. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise back to TDC. Caution: Rotating crankshaft clockwise to TDC will damage valves and pistons. 18. Place timing chain over exhaust camshaft sprocket, coolant pump or idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. 19. Remove intake camshaft timing pin and attach camshaft sprocket GM tool No. J-39579, or equivalent. 20. Rotate intake camshaft sprocket counterclockwise with tool until timing chain can be installed over sprocket. 21. Release tool. Timing chain tension between camshaft sprockets should tighten. 22. Timing pin should easily fit through intake camshaft sprocket timing hole into timing chain housing timing hole. If timing pin does not fit easily, repeat procedure. 23. With timing pins installed, raise and support vehicle with jack stands. 24. With timing chain slack between intake camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket, timing marks on crankshaft and engine block should be aligned. If crankshaft timing marks are not aligned, move timing chain one tooth forward or rearward to remove slack, then align marks. 25. Load tensioner to zero position by forming keeper out of heavy gauge wire. 26. Apply slight force on tensioner blade to compress plunger. 27. Insert small screwdriver into reset access hole and pry ratchet pawl away from ratchet teeth while forcing plunger completely in hole. 28. Install keeper between access hole and blade. 29. Install tensioner to chain housing and inspect plunger installation again. Ensure long end is toward crankshaft. 30. Lower vehicle enough to remove alignment dowel pins. 31. Rotate crankshaft two revolutions clockwise. 32. Align crankshaft keyway with cylinder block alignment mark and insert timing pins through camshaft sprockets into timing chain housing timing holes. 33. Timing pins should slide easily through timing holes. If timing pins cannot be easily inserted, repeat procedure to properly time engine. 34. Install timing chain guides and front cover. Torque front cover bolts to 108 inch lbs. 35. Torque engine mount bracket adapter bolts to 81 ft. lbs., then tighten an additional 90° turn. 36. Install accessory drive belt. 37. Inspect cooling system and fill to proper level with recommended coolant, as required. 38. Fill engine crankcase to proper level with recommended engine oil. 39. Connect battery ground cable. 40. Start engine and confirm proper operation, and ensure there are no leaks. 41. Clear DTC(s) using a suitably programmed scan tool. 42. These engines do not require a specified bleed procedure. After filling cooling system, run engine to operating temperature with radiator/pressure cap off. Air will then be automatically bled through opening. Hope that helps.

Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise to place No. 1 position at TDC on exhaust stroke by aligning dimple on crankshaft with block/bearing junction, Fig. 2. Lefthand side cam phaser arrows should point toward each other and be parallel to valve cover sealing surface. 12. Mark rotation direction of following timing chains for reference during installation: a. Lefthand side cam chain. b. Righthand side cam chain. c. Oil pump chain. d. Primary chain. 13. Reset righthand cam chain tensioner by pushing back tensioner piston and installing tensioner pin tool No. 8514, or equivalent. 14. Reset lefthand cam chain tensioner by lifting pawl, pushing back piston and installing tensioner pin tool No. 8514, or equivalent. 15. Disengage oil pump chain tensioner spring from dowel pin, then remove oil pump chain tensioner. 16. Remove oil pump sprocket T45 retaining bolt, then remove oil pump sprocket and oil pump chain. 17. Install righthand camshaft phaser lock tool No. 10202, or equivalent. Minor rotation may be required to install camshaft phaser lock. 18. Loosen both intake oil control valves, then exhaust oil control valve. 19. Remove righthand camshaft phaser lock tool, then oil control valve from righthand side intake cam phaser. 20. Pull righthand side intake cam phaser off of camshaft, then remove righthand side cam chain. 21. Remove oil control valve, then pull righthand side exhaust cam phaser off camshaft. 22. Install lefthand camshaft phaser lock tool No. 10202, or equivalent. Minor rotation may be required to install camshaft phaser lock. 23. Loosen both intake oil control valve and exhaust oil control valve. 24. Remove lefthand camshaft phaser lock tool, then oil control valve from lefthand side exhaust cam phaser. 25. Pull lefthand side exhaust cam phaser off of camshaft, then remove lefthand side cam chain. 26. Remove oil control valve, then pull lefthand side intake cam phaser off of camshaft. 27. Reset primary chain tensioner by pushing back tensioner piston and installing tensioner pin tool No. 8514, or equivalent. Remove two T30 bolts, then primary chain tensioner. 28. Remove timing chain. 29. Reverse procedure to install, note following: a. Verify No. 1 piston is positioned at TDC by aligning dimple on crankshaft with block/bearing cap junction, Fig. 3. b. Verify camshafts are set at TDC by positioning alignment holes vertically, Fig. 4. c. Ensure timing chain plated link is located at 12 o'clock when dimple on crankshaft is aligned with block/bearing cap junction, Fig. 5. d. Position lefthand side cam phasers so that arrows point toward each other and are parallel to valve cover sealing surface, Fig. 6. e. Torque idler sprocket bolt to 18 ft. lbs. f. Torque oil control valve to 110 ft. lbs. g. Torque oil pump sprocket bolt to 18 ft. lbs. h. Ensure there are 12 chain pins between exhaust cam phaser triangle marking and intake cam phaser circle marking, Fig. 7. i. Torque upper intake manifold bolts to 80 inch lbs., in sequence, as illustrated in Fig. 8. j. Torque lefthand valve cover bolts in sequence, as illustrated in Fig. 9, to 106 inch lbs. k. Torque righthand valve cover bolts in sequence, as illustrated in Fig. 10, to 106 inch lbs. l. Torque timing chain tensioner to 106 inch lbs. m. Torque timing chain guide to 106 inch lbs.

Remove radiator grille. b. Remove upper bolts (2), Fig. 1. c. Remove quick release screw (6) from below, Fig. 1. d. Remove bolts (5 and 4) pointing upward in area of wheel housing liner, Fig. 1. e. With aid from an assistant, pull cover parallel out of guides. f. Disconnect harness connectors of installed electrical components and hoses. g. Remove noise insulation. h. Remove intake air duct between lock carrier (1) and air cleaner housing at lock carrier, Fig. 2. i. Remove bolt (5) on bumper carrier (4) and install guide rods tool No. 3411, or equivalent, (6) on righthand and lefthand longitudinal member, Fig. 2. j. Remove bolts (2 and 3), Fig. 2. k. Lock carrier (1) can be pulled approximately .39 inch toward front onto guide rods tool No. 3411, (2), Fig. 3. 2. Remove upper toothed belt guard. 3. Bring camshaft gear to marking for TDC cylinder 1 by turning crankshaft. Marking on camshaft gear must be flush with marking on cylinder head cover, Fig. 4. 4. Loosen tensioner and remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket. 5. Turn crankshaft back slightly. 6. Remove camshaft sprocket. To loosen bolt, counter hold camshaft gear using tool No. 3036, or equivalent. 7. Remove hall sensor housing. 8. Remove washer and cover for hall sensor. 9. Clean drive chain and camshaft chain sprockets across from both arrows on bearing caps and mark installed position with a color marking. Do not mark chain using a center punch or similar means. Distance between both arrows or colored markings consists of 16 rollers of drive chain, Fig. 5. 10. Secure camshaft adjuster or chain tensioner using bracket for chain adjustment tool No. 3366, or equivalent. If chain tensioner retainer is fastened too tightly, chain tensioner or camshaft adjuster can be damaged, Fig. 6. 11. First remove bearing caps 3 and 5 from intake and exhaust camshafts, Fig. 7. 12. Remove double bearing cap. 13. Remove both bearing caps from chain gears on intake and exhaust camshafts. 14. Remove securing bolts of camshaft adjuster/chain tensioner. 15. Alternating in diagonal sequence, loosen bearing caps 2 and 4 of intake and exhaust camshafts and remove. 16. Remove intake and exhaust camshaft, chain tensioner or camshaft adjuster and chain tensioner retainer tool No. 3366, or equivalent. Installation When installing the camshafts, cam lobes for cylinder 1 must point upward. When installing bearing caps, verify marking on cap is readable from intake side of cylinder head. 1. When reusing old drive chain, mount drive chain according to color markings onto both camshafts. When using a new drive chain, distance between notches (A) and (B) must be 16 rollers on chain, Fig. 8. Illustration shows where first and sixteenth drive chain rollers must be installed on chain gears. 2. Notch (A) is slightly offset inward toward chain roller (1), Fig. 8. 3. Replace rubber/metal seal for camshaft adjuster or chain tensioner and coat hatched surface with thin coat of sealant D 454 300 A2, or equivalent, Fig. 9. 4. Insert camshaft adjuster/chain tensioner between drive chain. 5. Oil running surfaces of both camshafts. 6. Insert camshafts with drive chain and camshaft adjuster/chain tensioner into cylinder head. 7. Tighten camshaft adjuster/chain tensioner to specification, pay attention to bushing. 8. Alternating in diagonal sequence, tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 of intake and exhaust camshafts and tighten to specification, pay attention to bushing, Fig. 7. 9. Install both bearing caps on gears on intake and exhaust camshafts. Inspect camshaft for proper adjustment (arrows) and tighten bearing cap to specification, pay attention to alignment bushing, Fig. 10. 10. Remove chain tensioner/camshaft adjuster tool No. 3366, or equivalent. 11. Coat hatched surfaces of double bearing cap lightly using sealant D 454 300 A2, or equivalent, install and tighten to specification, pay attention to bushing, Fig. 11. 12. Install remaining bearing caps and tighten to specification, pay attention to alignment bushing. 13. Install camshaft gear, thin rib toward outside (arrows) and TDC marking visible and tighten screw to specification, use retainer tool No. 3036, or equivalent, Fig. 12. 14. Inspect setting of camshafts to each other. 15. After installing camshafts, engine may not be started for approximately 30 minutes. Hydraulic adjusting elements must seat themselves, otherwise valves will seat themselves on pistons. 16. Pistons must not be positioned at TDC. Ensure that crankshaft is still positioned before cylinder 1 TDC. 17. Align marking on camshaft sprocket with marking on cylinder head cover. 18. Place toothed belt onto crankshaft sprocket, observe direction of rotation. 19. Install lower toothed belt guard. 20. Install vibration damper/belt pulley with new bolts. Tighten to specification. 21. Turn crankshaft to set cylinder 1 at TDC. 22. Place toothed belt on in this order coolant pump, tensioning roller and camshaft gear. 23. Tension toothed belt as follows: a. If toothed belt tensioner is completely driven out, it must be pressed back by tensioner roller when installed. This procedure can last approximately five minutes. Pressing together with too much force can damage tensioner roller. b. Turn eccentric pulley counterclockwise using tensioning device tool No. 3387, or equivalent, tab (A) of eccentric pulley must not be bent, until tensioning device locking tool No. T10008, or equivalent, can be pulled free of stress, Fig. 13. c. Rotate eccentric pulley clockwise direction of (arrow) until a drill bit (2) with dimension (a) .31 inch, can be pulled through between tensioning lever and housing of tensioning device, Fig. 14. 24. Turn over crankshaft twice and inspect if markings on camshaft and crankshaft still align with their reference points. 25. Inspect dimension (a) .24-.39 inch between tensioning lever and housing of tensioning device using a drill bit (2), Fig. 14. 26. If dimension (a) is not obtained, release tension of toothed belt and tension it again. 27. Install upper and center toothed belt guards. 28. Install tensioner for serpentine belt. Tighten to specification. 29. Install serpentine belt. When installing serpentine belt, ensure that belt is seated correctly in belt pulleys. 30. Place torque wrench tool No. V.A.G 1331, or equivalent, in seven o'clock position and tighten A/C compressor belt tensioner to specification. Hold torque wrench securely and tighten bolts (A) to specification, Fig. 15. 31. Install lock carrier. 32. Install front bumper. 33. Tighten fasteners to specification. 34. Fill cooling system with coolant.

How do i reset the timing on 2001 2.7l concorde if the chain was replaced and the timing is off

Did you take pictures while removing the originals? It's always a good habit. Below are the instructions you need to follow. Your own pics are very helpful when doing a big job like this.
  1. Disconnect negative battery (1) cable.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove upper intake manifold.
  4. Remove cylinder head covers, crankshaft vibration damper, and timing chain cover.
CAUTION: When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage.

  1. Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to mark on oil pump housing (2). The mark on oil pump housing is 600 ATDC of #1 cylinder.
CAUTION: When the timing chain is removed and the cylinder heads are still installed, DO NOT rotate the camshafts or crankshaft without first locating the proper crankshaft position. Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage.

  1. Inspect all sprockets (4,9,11) and chain guides (2,5,10). Replace if worn.
  2. For crankshaft sprocket installation procedures Refer to CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET.
  3. If removed, install right and left side short chain guides (11). Tighten attaching bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) .
  4. Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to the mark on oil pump housing (3).
NOTE: Lubricate timing chain and guides with engine oil before installation.
  1. Place left side primary chain sprocket onto the chain so that the timing mark is located in-between the two (plated) timing links (1).

  1. Lower the primary chain with left side sprocket through the left cylinder head opening.
NOTE: The camshaft sprockets can be allowed to float on the camshaft hub during installation.
  1. Loosely position left side camshaft sprocket over camshaft hub.
  2. Align timing (plated) link to the crankshaft sprocket timing mark (3).
  3. Position primary chain onto water pump drive sprocket (10).
  4. Align right camshaft sprocket timing mark to the timing (plated) link on the timing chain (8) and loosely position over camshaft hub.
  5. Verify that all chain timing (plated) links are properly aligned to the timing marks on all sprockets.
  6. Install left side lower chain guide (2) and tensioner arm (5). Tighten attaching bolts to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) .
NOTE: Inspect O-ring on chain guide access plugs before installing. Replace O-ring as necessary.
  1. Install chain guide access plugs to cylinder heads. Tighten plugs to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) .
NOTE: To reset the primary timing chain tensioner, engine oil will first need to be purged from the tensioner.

  1. Purge oil from timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Place the check ball (2) end of tensioner into the shallow end of Special Tool 8186 (3).
    2. Using hand pressure, slowly depress tensioner until oil is purged from tensioner.

  1. Reset timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Position cylinder plunger (4) into the deeper end of Special Tool 8186 (3).
    2. Apply a downward force until tensioner is reset.
NOTE: If oil was not first purged from the tensioner, use slight finger pressure to assist the center arm pin of Special Tool 8186 to unseat the tensioner's check ball.

CAUTION: Ensure the tensioner is properly reset. The tensioner body (4) must bottom against the top edge of Special Tool 8186 (3). Failure to properly perform the resetting procedure may cause tensioner jamming.

NOTE: Inspect the tensioner O-ring (2) for nicks or cuts and make sure the snap ring (1) is correctly installed, replace as necessary.

  2. Position tensioner retaining plate (2) and tighten bolts (1) to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) .

  3. Rotate engine slightly clockwise to remove timing chain slack, if necessary.

    1. Install the timing chain by performing the following procedure:
    1. Verify that the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with the mark on the oil pump housing.
    2. Place the left side primary timing chain sprocket onto the chain, while aligning the timing mark on the sprocket to the 2 plated links on the chain.
    3. Lower the chain with the left sprocket through the left cylinder head opening.
    4. Loosely position the left camshaft sprocket over the camshaft hub.
    5. Align the plated link to the crankshaft sprocket timing mark.
    6. Position the timing chain around the water pump drive sprocket.
    7. Align the right camshaft sprocket timing mark to the plated link on the timing chain and loosely position the sprocket over the camshaft hub.
    8. Verify that all the plated links are aligned to their proper timing marks.
    1. Install the left lower timing chain guide and tensioner. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
      NOTE Inspect the timing chain guide access plug O-rings before installing. Replace damaged O-rings as necessary.
    2. Install the timing chain guide access plug to the left cylinder head and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
      NOTE To reset the timing chain tensioner, oil will first need to be purged from the tensioner.
    1. Purge oil from the timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the tensioner from the tensioner housing.
    2. Place the check ball end of the tensioner into the shallow end of the Tensioner Resetting Special tool 8186.
    3. Using hand pressure, slowly depress the tensioner until oil is purged from the cylinder.
    4. Reinstall the tensioner into the tensioner housing.
    1. Reset the timing chain tensioner using the following procedure:
    1. Position the cylinder plunger into the deeper side of the Tensioner Resetting special tool 8186. Apply a downward force until the tensioner is reset.

    WARNING

    Ensure that the tensioner is properly reset. The tensioner body must be bottomed against the top edge of the Tensioner Resetting Special tool 8186. Failure to properly perform the resetting procedure may cause tensioner jamming.

    1. Install the chain tensioner into the right cylinder head.
    2. At the right cylinder head, insert a 3 / 8 in. square drive extension with a breaker bar into the intake camshaft drive hub. Rotate the camshaft until the camshaft hub aligns with the camshaft sprocket and damper attaching holes. Install the sprocket attaching bolts and torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    3. Turn the left camshaft by inserting a 3 / 8 in. square drive extension with a breaker bar into the intake camshaft drive hub. Rotate the camshaft until the camshaft hub aligns with the camshaft sprocket and damper attaching holes. Install the sprocket attaching bolts and torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    4. If necessary, rotate the engine slightly clockwise to remove any slack in the timing chain.
    5. To arm the timing chain tensioner: Use a flat-bladed prytool to gently pry the tensioner arm towards the tensioner slightly. Then, release the tensioner arm. Verify the tensioner extends.
    6. Inspect and replace the timing chain cover gasket and oil seal.
    7. Apply a 1 / 8 in. (3mm) bead of sealer at the parting line of the oil pan and engine block.
      NOTE When installing the timing cover, guide the seal over the crankshaft to prevent damage to the seal-s lip.
    Install or connect the following:


    Timing cover and gasket and torque the M10 bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the M6 bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)


    Accessory drive belt tensioner pulley


    Power steering pump


    Crankshaft damper


    Crankshaft center bolt and torque the bolt to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) using tool 8191


    Accessory drive belts


    Fan module and electrical wiring harness


    Upper radiator crossmember


    Negative battery cable

See TIMING CHAIN COVER (NON-SUPERCHARGED). <br />Remove the variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid. </span><br /> <span class="postbody" roundtrip="0" lastvisited="77">Remove the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing retaining bolts and remove the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing. </span><br /> <span class="postbody" roundtrip="0" lastvisited="77">Remove and discard the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing "O" rings. <br />Raise and support vehicle. Remove the bolt which secures the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor to the flywheel housing. Remove the CKP sensor and allow it to hang free under the engine. Remove the torque converter bolts access grommet from the flywheel housing. </span><br /> <span class="postbody" roundtrip="0" lastvisited="77">Install the crankshaft damper bolt (old one) to the crankshaft, hand-tight only. Rotate crankshaft until the triangular arrow indent on the flywheel is visible through the access hole. See Fig. 144. Confirm that the timing flat on each camshaft is uppermost position. <br />Position the crankshaft so that the Crankshaft Setting Peg (303-531) engages fully into the timing slot. Install and tighten the bolt to secure the crankshaft setting peg. See Fig. 145. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt from the crankshaft and lower the vehicle. <br />Install the Camshaft Locking Tool (303-530) to the "A" bank camshafts, aligning the shafts slightly as necessary. Loosen the bolt that secures the exhaust camshaft sprocket and the bolt that secures the variable camshaft timing oil control unit. See Fig. 146. Remove camshaft locking tool. <br />Remove the primary chain tensioner bolts, primary chain tensioner and tensioner backing plate. See Fig. 147. <br />Remove the primary timing chain tensioner pivot bolt and remove the primary timing chain tensioner blade. See Fig. 148. <br />Remove the bolt which secures the primary timing chain guide. Noting the position of the primary timing chain guide, remove the primary timing chain guide from the upper retaining pin. See Fig. 149. <br />Remove the primary timing chain from the variable camshaft timing oil control unit and from the crankshaft sprocket. Clean and inspect all components. <br />Installation <br />If "B" bank timing chain was removed, see INSTALLATION. If not, go to next step. <br />If previously removed, install the timing chain sprocket to the crankshaft. The teeth of the "A" bank and the "B" bank timing chain sprockets on the crankshaft must be out of phase with each other. If they are in phase after installing, remove the sprocket, turn it on its vertical axis and reinstall sprocket. See Fig. 150. <br />Install the chain tensioning tool to the exhaust camshaft sprocket. Reposition the sprocket (and the variable camshaft timing oil control unit) for the most advantageous position for use of the tool. See Fig. 151. Remove the tool. <br />Install the primary timing chain into position over the crankshaft sprocket and the variable camshaft timing oil control unit. There must be no slack on the drive side of the primary timing chain and the sprockets must not be rotated on the camshafts, or the tensioning tool may not fit. See Fig. 152. <br />Install the primary timing chain tensioner blade to the cylinder block. See Fig. 148. Install the pivot bolt and tighten specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Push the primary timing chain tensioner piston into the tensioner body to provide clearance for installing the primary timing chain. Insert a thin rigid wire through the hole in the end of the tensioner piston to displace the ball from the non-return valve seat. See Fig. 153. With the wire in position, press the piston fully into the tensioner body. Remove the wire. <br />Install the 2 primary timing chain tensioner bolts to the primary timing chain tensioner and locate the tensioner backing-plate on to the 2 bolts. Align and install the primary timing chain tensioner to the cylinder block and to the mating slot on the rear face of the primary timing chain tensioner blade. See Fig. 147. Tighten the primary timing chain tensioner bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Use a Primary Chain Wedge (303-533), or 2 if needed, between the primary timing chain tensioner and primary timing chain tensioner blade, to take up the slack in the chain for tightening of the variable camshaft timing control unit and exhaust camshaft sprocket. See Fig. 154. <br />Using the chain tensioning tool, apply force to the tool in an counterclockwise direction to tension the chain on its drive side. See Fig. 151. While applying opposing force to the sprocket and chain, tighten the exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Using the Variable Camshaft Timing Oil Control Unit Setting Tool (303-654), rotate the variable camshaft timing oil control unit fully counterclockwise to the fully retarded position. See Fig. 155. <br />Check that the primary chain wedges are still in place. While applying opposing force to the sprocket and chain using the chain tensioning tool, tighten the variable camshaft timing oil control unit bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Remove the chain tensioning tool and the primary chain wedges and camshaft locking tool. <br />Raise and support vehicle. Remove crankshaft setting peg. Install the CKP sensor and bolt to the flywheel housing. See Fig. 143. Tighten the CKP sensor bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Install the access grommet to the housing and lower the vehicle. <br />WARNING:Check that the ring dowels are engaged squarely. Fully locate the assembly as much as possible by hand. Failure to follow this procedure may result in damage to the vehicle. <br /><br />Install NEW "O" rings to the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing. Lubricate the "O" rings and the bushing. Install the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing. See Fig. 142. Install the variable camshaft timing oil control unit housing bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />Install the variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid. See Fig. 141.     Timing specs

    SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED (or equivalents)
    • J-36008, Camshaft sprocket timing alignment pins.
    • J-39579, Camshaft sprocket wrench.
    CAUTIONS:
    • The timing chain on the 1996 LD9 (VIN T) Twin Cam Engine is not to be replaced with the timing chain from any other model year. The timing sprockets are different on the Twin Cam Engine and the shape of the links matches the sprockets. Engine damage may result if the wrong timing chain is used.
    • The timing chain and crankshaft sprocket MUST be marked so that they are reinstalled with the same side facing out at the time of reassembly.
    • Failure to follow the removal and installation procedures could result in severe engine damage.
    REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
    1. Negative battery cable.
    2. Front cover, refer to Timing Cover / Service and Repair .
    3. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are aligned.
    4. Timing chain guides.
    5. Raise and support vehicle.
    6. Ensure slack in timing chain is above tensioner assembly, then remove chain tensioner. The timing chain must be disengaged from grooves in tensioner shoe to permit removal of shoe. Position a suitable screwdriver under timing chain while pulling shoe outward. If difficulty is encountered in removing tensioner shoe, proceed as follows:
      1. Lower vehicle, then while holding the intake camshaft sprocket with J-39579, remove sprocket bolt and washer.
      2. Remove washer, then install bolt into camshaft by hand.
      3. Position a suitable three jaw puller into intake camshaft sprocket relief holes and remove sprocket. CAUTION: Do NOT pry on camshaft sprocket as damage to sprocket or timing chain housing may result.
    1. Tensioner assembly attaching bolts and tensioner assembly.
    2. MARK CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET AND TIMING CHAIN outer surface for reassembly.
    3. Timing chain.
    INSTALL OR CONNECT
    1. Intake camshaft sprocket onto camshaft with surface marked during removal showing.
    2. Intake camshaft sprocket retaining bolt and washer, torque to 70 Nm (52 ft lbs) while holding the sprocket with J-39579 (if removed).
    3. Timing pins, J-36008, through holes in camshaft sprockets into holes in timing chain housing to position camshafts for proper timing. If camshafts are out of position and must be rotated more that 1/8 turn to insert timing pins:
      1. Crankshaft MUST be rotated 90°clockwise off of TDC in order to give the valves adequate clearance to open.
      2. Once the camshafts are in position and the timing pins have been installed rotate crankshaft COUNTERCLOCKWISE to TDC. CAUTION: Do NOT rotate the crankshaft clockwise to TDC, valve or piston damage could occur.
    1. Timing chain over exhaust camshaft sprocket, around idler sprocket and around crankshaft sprocket.
    2. Set camshaft sprockets at timed position and install timing chain. Remove timing pin from intake camshaft. Using J-39579, rotate the intake camshaft sprocket counterclockwise until timing chain can be installed over sprocket. Release J-39579 after timing chain has been installed over sprocket. The length of chain between intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets should tighten. The timing pin should easily fit through intake camshaft sprocket timing hole into timing chain housing timing hole. If timing pin does not fully index, the camshafts are NOT timed correctly and the procedure MUST be repeated.
    3. With timing pins installed, raise and support vehicle.
    4. With slack removed from timing chain between intake camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket, timing marks on crankshaft and engine block should be aligned. If the marks are not aligned, move timing chain one tooth forward or rearward to align marks. Remove slack and recheck marks.
    5. Reload tensioner assembly to zero position as follows:
      1. Form a keeper out of heavy gauge wire into a U-shaped piece with a half inch opening.
      2. Apply slight force on tensioner blade to compress plunger.
      3. Insert small screwdriver into reset access hole and pry rachet pawl away from ratchet teeth while forcing the plunger completely in the hole.
      4. Install keeper between access hole and blade.
    1. Tensioner assembly to chain housing and recheck plunger assembly installation, noting long end is toward crankshaft.
    2. Tighten timing chain tensioner bolts to 10 Nm (89 in lbs) .
    3. Lower vehicle to point where timing pins can be removed from camshaft sprockets.
    4. Rotate crankshaft two revolutions in the clockwise direction. Align crankshaft keyway with the mark on cylinder block and reinstall timing pins through camshaft sprockets into housing timing holes. Timing pins should slide easily through timing holes. If timing pins cannot be inserted easily, repeat procedure to properly time engine. CAUTION: If the engine is not correctly timed, severe engine damage could occur.
    5. Timing chain guides.
