If it turns over hard in the morning then either something is staying on and draining the battery or the battery is nearing the end of its life. Check things like the glovebox light, trunk light for staying on. Simply remove the bulbs and see if that helps. If not , you should pick up a new battery.
If it turns over good the problem would be either the cold start system or your fuel system is losing pressure overnight. This would require furthur diagnosis. Hope this helps.
It turns over great. It just want start the first time I hit the key. How do I check the cold start system?
I'm not sure, never had to work on one. doing some loking last night I also found situatiuons similar to yours which were caused by the check valve leaking. It is in your fuel system, usually at the fuel pump and it keeps pressure in the fuel lines when the car is shut off. If it was leaking by ,that would result in little or no fuel at the injectors in the morning. Hence, extra cranking to start the car but it wouldn't necessarily make it hard to start the rest of the day.
The cold start system is run by the car's computer and should engage every time you turn the key to some degree. If it wasn't working I would think that the car would require extra cranking any time it was shut off long enough for the engine to cool down.
If you go to "alldatadiy.com" they have a long list of TSB's for your vehicle, several of which pertain to hard starting problems. On the top of their page you will see a box regarding recalls. click on it and follow the steps. It won't let you read them without subscribing ($30US) but it will give you TSB numbers and dates to take with you if you go to the dealer. If you know a mechanic or service writer he could look them up for you as well because most shops rely on "alldata" to work on vehicles. I am inclined to go with the check valve as the problem myself but checking the cold start wouldn't hurt either. Hope this helps.
It ended up being the battery after all.
