Question about 1987 Honda Prelude

5 Answers

I have a 1987 honda prelude and the alternator is not charging. i took the alternator off and had it tested twice and it tested good both tomes. the circuit going through the alt. light checks ok. the circuit that turns the alt. light off checks ok. the hot at all times wire going to the alt regulator is ok.the only wire i'm not sure about is the one thast goes to the brain. how should you test this? does this mean that the brain is bad or have i missed something?

Hi, the wire to the computer is inconsequential to the operation of the charging system. Have you replaced the regulator?

this wiring diagram is for carberated engines. i have a fuel injected 2.0. the regulator is built in to the alt. the alt has been tested and is ok. the chilton manual i have says in this model the comp. controls charging.

OK, you didn't mention that you had the FI engine. I do have the diagram for that, but since you have already rated me as unhelpful, then I wouldn't want to make you wrong by helping you.

i didn't say that you were unhelpful. i rated you as somewhat helpful. the wiring diagram was somewhat helpful. give me something i can work with and i'll give you 5 stars +++.

Sorry, I thought I posted where the computer is. It's supposed to be under the carpet by the passenger's feet, below the heater box. If you are getting voltage from the computer, I doubt that is the problem. Are you getting 12 volts to all of the other wires at the alternator?

Jeff, You posted the computer location under Carl's response. Bobby, Jeff has a much better understanding of this situation and the schematics. I would recommend following his advise on this. Good Luck.

I would check the main bus fuse to teh charging system in teh Power Distribution box and make sure that is good, if you are doing all these checks because your ALT light is on it may not be the Alternator. The Prelude had one light for the battery and the Alternator. If the battery has a bad or dead cell in it that is keeping it from charging the ALT light will come on. If any positive wire on the system is grounding under the hood you will get a no charge condition. This is common in older vehicles if the main positive going to the starter has worn a bare spot against the frame or engine and grounds that wire so check that as well. Take the battery to Auto Zone or Advance Auto and have it checked and load checked. They can tell you if it has a dead cell or just needs charged.

I HAVE CHECKED AND CLEANED ALL OF THE WIRE CONNECTIONS.I TOOK THE NEW BATTERY OUT OF MY GRAND CHEROKEE AND PUT IT IN THE HONDA. I RECHECKED THE WIRING GOING TO THE ALT.. ALL OK.I STARTED IT UP AND STILL NO CHARGE. THE WHITE AND RED WIRE COMING FROM THE COMP. TO THE ALT IS PUTTING OUT 4 VOLTS WHILE CAR IS RUNNING.I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE OR NOT BUT I HAVE JUST ABOUT COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE COMP. IS BAD. I CAN'T FIND THE COMP TO CHECK IT OUT. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE THE COMP IS LOCATED? I HAVE TOOK THE DASH APART, TOOK THE KICK PANELS OFF, PULLED ALL THE CARPET BACK, LOOKED UNDER THE SEATS, AND UNDER THE HOOD AND I CAN'T FIND IT.I'M ABOUT TO PULL MY HAIR OUT OVER THIS THING.THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE. HOPEFULLY WE CAN ALL WORK TOGETHER AND FIGURE THIS THING OUT.

Take the battery to Auto Zone and ask them to load test it and check the cells. It sounds like you have a dead cell in the battery.

CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND REPLACE BOTH BATTERY CABLES. IF BOTH BATTERY CABLES VERY OLD.THAT WILL CAUSE HIGH RESISTANCE IN CHARGING SYSTEM.ALTERNATOR IS NOT GETTING NO BATTERY FEED POWER THATS WHY IT CANT CHARGE BATTERY.THE POSITIVE FEED WIRE TO ALTERNATOR COULD BE BROKEN.

You did not mention a bad battery. charge battery and take and get a readout of charging system, auto zone advanced etc. will check for free. the battery may not be holding a charge! and also check all grounds in charging system.

The computer is behind the carpet under the passenger side. Pull the carpet down from behind the heater box to expose the computer. There are 2 connectors. I believe the white/red wire from the alternator goes to pin B14. You can check continuity of the wire by using a jumper wire from the alternator connector. If that wire is good, doublecheck the 2 fuses for continuity. Both the 10 amp Regulator fuse and the 15 amp ECU fuse are needed to run the alternator. If all that is good, check the output voltage at the back of the alternator with engine running. If the voltage there is higher than it is at the battery, replace the white charge wire.

Battery wont charge on a 1983 honda prelude

If the battery is continually going flat, first test that the alternator is charging at least 13.5 volts at the battery. If that is ok check the current drain when the car is turned off. It should be less than .050Amp (50 milliamps) If all that is ok get the battery tested. If its more than 3 years old its likely to have a weak cell and will need replacing.

1985 Honda Prelude replaced alternator and regulator trouble shooting wires, battery light still comes on

I had an 84 Prelude with a similar problem. I will assume that the car runs just fine as though there is nothing wrong but has the light on. When this happened to me it was just a bad diode in the alternator. If the battery takes a load fine and shows good charge then take off the alternator, take it back to autozone or wherever you bought it and have them test it. I would bet there is a diode bad and they will give you a replacement. Good luck!

1991 honda accord will not charge alternator test good

1st check and make sure you have a good ground on the battery. Check the battery. Make sure it passes a load test. It is possible that the battery is not holding a charge. Make sure all alternator connections are connected.

1992 prelude si - battery/alternator prob?

if you can charge the battery and drive it for a while then sounds like the altenator has failed and is not re-charging the battery, good way to test is to charge the battery, start the car and turn the light on, if everything is dimm or the motor dies there is little to no charge voltage, and will require altenator work

it sounds like you want a "power probe" . It's the best way to test continuity. A little pricey, though.
