How do I opened a fully automatic convertible top manually on a 1997 328i bmw

Most have a seperate crank to open and close top in case of an emergency ....If you have checked all fuses,relays,..etc..and know motor is broken you can remove the drive from the motor and raise it manually by hand with an assistant on the other side..

I had the top replaced on my 1997 3 series BMW convertable. and now it wont open all the way. I press the button to open an it goes through the 1st step of opening then the top gets stuck, it just stops....

Either have shop that redid your top or a BMW dealer, re-sync the power top motors. They do a literal "ballet" back there and if they are out of sync can twist your top. Have a specialist sync your top motors.

1996 bmw 328i convertible top won't open

The top works with two circular motors in the trunk. The motors are similar to the ones that open and close the windows. The motors of the roof can be engaged and disengaged. One motor drives the roof lid the other one drives the roof itself. The trick to engage and disengage the motors so that they are correctly syncronized to opening and closing.
