'94 Honda Accord EX won't start sometimes

My car had problems starting when it was hot here in Fresno a couple of months ago. What I would do, then, is wait for a few minutes. Eventually, after leaving it alone for about half an hour, it will start.

I've changed my Ignition wires a couple months ago just because it was warped and won't go into its chamber (where the spark plug goes) located over the top of the engine. It's been working fine since then, even when I had to start it at a 100 degrees outside. I thought that was the problem. I never had a problem starting it since then.

Tonight, I couldn't start the car again. It's about 80 degrees out.

When I turn the ignition switch on, it goes through the normal initialization of the different modules and circuits. Self tests are ok. No engine light on. D4 would come on every few times, as I tried to start it a few times observing the panel for any sign at all. Nothing. Things are ok there. I would turn off the ignition and back on and it (D4 blinking) will go away. Crank it up, still, won't start.

Before, at times, I would stop to get gas and when I am done refueling, I would see the D4 blink. I found out that this is telling me that TCM (Transmission Control Module) has a problem. When I start the car with the D4 blinking, engine starts, but I don't have normal transmission power. Seems like it is slipping. The car will move very sluggishly. I would turn of the engine and restart it immediately ... it will start normally, without D4 blinking ... and I would have normal transmission conditions.

The D4 has not come on till tonight. Like I mentioned it will go out if I turn the ignition key off, then back on.

I am suspecting that it might be my Fuel Pump. I noticed that I would not hear it come on just before I engage the key to start position. While I wait for an answer, I will look up my Electrical Diagram and see if the Fuel Pump is being powered up, hopefully accessible via the junction terminals in the Engine Compartment.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thank you Grevit1 for your input. I really appreciated you - taking the time to read through my issue and offered a solution. If you ever need any help with your home computer, post it and I'll do my best to find you a solution for you.

    This is a follow-up to my issue:

    After letting it sit for about an hour, it started right away. I'm glad that it started, however, the problem still continues to be elusive.

    I went to the store with no problems. However, when we stopped, I decided to check whether I would have a blinking D4 light ... sure enough it was blinking. I did not restart it then ... I figured it might have been related to the heat coming from the engine. After about an hour, it started right away with no D4 light blinking. This looks like a separate issue though, from the original problem I have of not starting. By-the-way, I have to mention that I have a new powerful battery and it cranks the engine good when I'm turning the ignition on. No problem there.

    I checked the location of the Fuel Pump relay in my manual ... didn't find it yet. I looked under the hood I stilll can't find it. As soon as I find it, I'll post it so that anyone that has the same issue might benefit from this problem. If I had found where that relay was, I could have tested glevit1's suggestion that it might be the pump relay.

    Here's what I am suspecting: It's something to do with, maybe, with fuel pressure on the fuel lines.

    Like I mentioned earlier on my post, the problem had not occurred for about two months. I did not go anywhere yesterday. So, I'm thinking that during the time that I last used it till a few hours ago, the fuel line pressure had gone down ... making it take a while for the fuel pressure to build up. Why is it happening?

    A very slow leak maybe, in the fuel lines ... I surmise. A defective fuel pressure regulator, maybe?
    A clogged fuel filter, maybe. I will continue to investigate this issue.

    I don't really suspect my fuel pump efficiency because, about a month ago, I drove it to San Diego ... about almost 400 miles, or so. No problems going up and down through the Grapevine. So, if my pump was not able to supply enough fuel pressure to the injectors, I would have noticed a decrease in power, especially going uphill. The car was loaded too with our stuff.

    I will continue with my trend of thought later.

    If anyone has anymore ideas about what is happening concerning my issue, please post it for all of us that are or might be experiencing the same issue in the near future.

    It was a little warm out, about 83 degrees. Wind temperature is lower.

    I started the car, about 4pm ... it started right away as usual. The 'Gremlin' is still lurking somewhere in there .... until we all catch it!

    I just want to update my situation so that anyone having the same problem can benefit from my findings.

    No problem starting from my last post... until last night.

    It was a nice day today - not hot at all. It was cool - about 60 degrees
    the night before, though.

    I am suspecting that the drop in temperature might have affected
    whichever component is failing. More than likely, as glevit1 suggested,
    it is the fuel pump relay. I still have not located that yet.

    i have the same problem....when i turn the key if the d4 light blinks it will turn but not start...if the light does not blink it starts and runs fine...it usually blinks when hot outside or if i try to restart after a long run when engine is still hot......I was told by an acura and former honda (same cars anyway)technitian that it could be a speed sensor or one of about 5 other things.He said that to find out exactly you need to have the transmission codes checked...I havent found the terminal to do this so i may break down and spend the $$$ and have the Honda dealer do it....ide sujjest you may want to do the same...goodluck and long live your Honda!!!

    Ok, I got good news for all of you.

    Yes, it was the Main Relay. It was a bad solder that was causing my intermittent problem.
    It took a lot of patience and perseverance to get to that relay.

    So far, so good. Since I fixed that bad solder joint I've never had a starting problem since.

    I just saw the link you sent Hauvie. It was a very good page and the illustrations are
    excellent. I wish I had that when I was troubleshooting my problem. Thanks to you Hauvie
    for sharing that info.

    And big thanks to Glevit1 for giving me the best tip, first, about the Main Relay.

    I'll update my post in a couple of days.

    Good News!

    The fix I did last Oct. 6 worked great. It's been through hot and cold weather and no problems at all up to date. Starts right away even at freezing (32 degrees) temperatures.

    I recently purchased, Jan., 2, 2009, a 1994 Honda Accord Ex which had a 178,000 miles on it and has been very well taken cared of. My son has complained to me on several occasions that he will be out and about driving and all of a sudden he'll try to start the car and it will not start. This happened two or three times and then after sitting for a few minutes or so it will start up, sometimes a half an hour. Last month it sat for two weeks because it wouldn't start and my boyfriend and I went to see what was going on and he took the air inductor off on one end and sprayed some starting fluid in it while my son turned it over and after a couple of tries it started. Since then he has had it not start two or three more times. Can someone please tell me whats going on?

    Engine will turn over but not start. The check engine light does not come on. The D4 light will blink rapidly. If I reset the computer, then it will start. I have gotten the transmission codes that come on. 1,8,10,13,14. 1 and 8 have been the most common which are the, Lock up and shift solenoids. I have replaced both of these but no change in starting car. This is a random issue but getting more prevalent. When it starts up, car will run normal and shift normal. Any ideas out there?

Check fuel pump relay. These are known to fail under elevated temperatures and then work when the temperature drops.

    thanks this helped me find the problem on my 94 honda accord ex 2.2l vtec in like 2 mins so if you have this simular problem try it the parts like 50 bucks and right under the dash bye the stearing columb you dont even need tools to change it after changing mine i drove a 1000 mile round trip and didnt have a single problem

you have problem with your transmission computer located under your dashboard behind your radio comparment i had the same problem replaced that for a used one or rebilt one and solve
just make sure they sincronized again with transmission

Electrical problems with my 96 honda accord

This happens because the removal of the current to the computer or CPU gets de-programed. You may be able to solve the problem (if it comes up gain ) by disconnecting the negative cable with the engine off. Then renstalling it back after a minute.This will reprogram the computer.

remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over could be the head gasket if so the stop leak additive is a tempory soloution to a perminent problem. replace head gasket

Car stopped working

I had a very similar problem with my 2005 accord a few months ago. Try jump starting the car with jumper cables. If the car starts and everything works normally, then the battery is probably your problem. This turned out to be my problem. Good luck.
