Turn on your lights and try to start; if the lights dim a little but nothing turns, you probably have a bad (corroded) connection either at the battery or the ground strap between engine and chassis. If the lights dim a lot, then it's time to try turning the engine with a wrench on the crankshaft. Do NOT have the ignition on when trying this. If the compression is normal, it will take some muscle to turn the crankshaft. If it is frozen, you may have a seized bearing or other reason that the engine is jammed.

Hyundai won't turn over

So the starter is turning the engine over (you can see the serpentine belt moving when you try to start)?

New Porsche 911 battery April 2012, car won't turn over at all.

It could be that your alternator is dead again. Check to see that you have at least 12 volts across the battery when you're trying to start the engine. It could also be the switch that tells the car that the clutch is pushed all the way in (for manual models, or that the car is in park for auto shifters)

2001 Yukon SLT, engine will not turn over - friends think it's the alternator. Battery is 2 yrs old. My friend tried to jump start it, that did nothing, still won't stay turned on. I got the...

Hi there !

I won't say its an alternator problem because the alternator only charges the battery when its on, And it should start with the jump cables even if the battery and the alternator are bad. your Issue is not clear. Does the car start when you jump it ?

The van lost all the power, no ligths, wont star and it has a new battery

SOUND LIKE ALTERNATOR FAULTY.HAVE VECHICLE BATTERY CHARGED OR JUMPED STARTED.WITH ENGINE RUNNING CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE WITH ENGINE RUNNING SHOULD BE 13.5 - 14.5 VOLTS. IF NOT ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR FAILED.BUT FIRST CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND CHECK ALTERNATOR BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES FOR DAMAGE OR LOOSE CONNECTION.WHEN YOU TAKE OLD ALTERNATOR TO AUTO PARTS STORE LET THEM TEST ALTERNATOR FIRST.MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE ELECTRICAL WIRING PROBLEMS IN VECHICLE.

Put in a new atl wont charge

If both the alternator and the battery are good, either the alternator isn't turning fast enough (slipping belt or engine idle speed too slow), or you have a wiring problem.

To check your wiring, look for the "1" terminal on the back of the alternator (left side of spade terminal connector). When you turn the ignition key to the run position without starting the engine, the alternator warning light should be at full brightness. If the bulb is burned out, the alternator will not get the excitation current it needs to start up (it goes through the bulb). With the engine running, you should measure 12 Volts at the 1 terminal (this is the excitation terminal).

Another thing to check is whether the battery charge wire is good. If it is corroded inside at the battery clamp end or burned out, you won't get charging even though the alternator appears to be working. If you don't have an ohmmeter, you can make a quick test by adding a new 8 AWG wire between the output terminal and the battery clamp. If the battery now charges, the original wire is bad. If this works, I recommend installing an inline fuse at the alternator end no larger than the largest size used in your electrical system, just in case something happens to the jumper wire. That way you won't burn out your alternator.

The heater/AC issue could very likely be a separate problem, but inadequate power may keep that system from running properly. (Note: low idle speed or belt problems will also be detrimental to AC performance.)

Will not star or turn over.

CHECK BATTERY CABLES MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT CORRODED AND LOOSE.ALSO CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE.SHOULD BE 12.6 VOLTS IF NOT REPLACED BATTERY.BEFORE REMOVING NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE TURN OF RADIO FIRST.AFTER INSTALLING NEW BATTERY.WITH ENGINE RUNNING CHECK ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT BATTERY SHOULD BE 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS.DOING THIS WILL MAY SURE BATTERY GETTING GOOD CHARGE.2 REASON BATTERIES STOP WORKING.THEY FAIL FROM OLD AGE AND ALTERNATOR CHARGING SYSTEM NOT WORKING.IF BATTERY CABLES VERY OLD I WOULD REPLACE THEM.THAT WILL HELP BATTERY GET BETTER CHARGE.OLD BATTERY CABLES PUT A RESISTANCE ON CHARGING CIRCUIT CAUSE ALTERNATOR WORK HARDER TO KEEP BATTERY CHARGED WHICH WILL SHORTEN THE ALTERNATOR LIFE.
