Sounds like the starter relay has shorted out, unplug it and get a replacement , if you have another one thats the same in the vehicle, trade it out and see if the motor starts, if so ,, Just get another relay

My wife has just rung me to say the car "died" as

Hey there. Still trying to get use to this new account. Your hot side battery wires, one leads to the alternator and the other leads straight to the starter motor. It is located on the bottom front of the engine. Make sure you disconnect the battery first. Before you change it, make sure the ground wire is grounded. It may be the issue. If it is, replace the starter motor.

1995 volkswagon golf over heating. Replaced upper and lower radiator hose. Engine cooling fan doesnt kick on. What else should I look for.

I would check the radiator fan switch, it's mounted in the radiator on the driver side of the radiator, you should be able to see it from the engine compartment. Also check the fan relay and fan fuse.
