My 2003 325i bmw will not unlock the doors-the key remote doesn't work, the inside button in the middle of console doesn't work and the only door to put the key in is the drivers door and it doesn't work-so I have to leave a window down so as not to get locked out anymore- I don't know what would be the cheapest fix as I am unemployed thank you !

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
I believe that you have a faulty door lock actuator. You may want to go with the actuator first and I believe you'll be good after the replacement.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

  • Hi, i can help.

  • BMW has had problems with voltage causing fuses to blow in relation to the door lock fuses in the fuse panel in the glove box. Specifically 56 for the drivers door only and 57 if all doors are effected but check 2,19 and 63 as well all located in the fuse box in the glove box. I recommend a look at those first as replacing them can fix the problem. Please note that AFTER you replace the fuses you MUST unhook the battery for two minutes to reset things. Just replacing the fuses will not work. Please see the diagram below.

  • If the problem persists or the fuses look good then i suggest getting an actuator for the door locks. BMW had a technical service bulletin out about this as well.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Driver side door lock actuator is malfunctioning. The door panel needs to be taken apart from inside and actuator needs to be inspected and replaced. The actuator costs approx $150.You will get it from autoparts store or from local bmw dealer.-------- ----------
After you remove door panel, you have to unbolt the window from the regulator, remove the 2 10mms on the left side of the door and pull that side of the regulator out of the way. then there are 3 T30 torx by the door latch that you need to remove, a cable that you pull off that connects your exterior door handle to the lock actuator andunplug the actuator. Then you can shimmy it out. The door pin and cables that attaches to the inside door handle need to be switched over to the new one.
---------- Before directly replacing actuator, try lubricating actuator,m sometimes it just gets stuck and this causes the problem.-----There's a temporary solution that might do the trick. Take the door lock pin out, take a can of WD40 with the straw attached on it, put the straw in parallel with the door pin shaft, insert it as down as possible and spray a generous amount of WD40. The WD40 will follow the door lock shaft and eventually get into the actuator. Sometimes it will revive it and door will start getting locked unlocked, sometimes it won't help. Better to leave the door open to have the extra WD40 drain on the floor and not on the seals. Should see results if any within a day.But if this is not helping, then getting the actuator replaced will help.----------- Thanks.Helpmech.

2000 cadillac deville driver side won't open with the key

1) Key turns but dose not unlock door. This means that the rod that goes to the back of the lock has came off. This also means that is the reason door is not unlocking with the remote as it pops the lock rod inside the door which pushes the lock open.
2) Key does not turn lock at all but works passengers side door. This means that the locks has been changed in the door, but that doesn't sound like the problem as you say the remote doesn't open the drivers side door so more than likely the rod has came off the back of the lock

I changed the key batteries for my 1999 BMW 323i after they died. Afterwards the remote unlock and lock won't work, the car also won't start but it can turn over/on and the radio and the lights...

stick the key in the ignition, turn it to the on position, remove it within 5 seconds, then hold the unlock button down and press the lock button 3 times within 10 seconds and release both buttons. The doors should lock/unlock to give you confirmation and your key should work.

Central Locking does not work

You must reset your remote control in order for the lock/unlock to work properly.

To reset remote you would:
1)Insert Key in Ignition Turn to Position 1(Don't Start the Engine) for about 5 seconds
2)Turn Key Off and HOLD the LOCK button on Remote while pressing the UNLOCK 3 TIMES
3)Release both lock and unlock buttons you are holding
4)All doors should automatically unlock

And exit the door and lock with the Remote.

BMW Keyless Entry not working

hi, to program the keys to the vehicle is quite simple

1) open the vehicle, sit inside and close the door

2) insert the key in the ignition and turn to position 1 so that just the air bag light illuminates

3) press and hold the unlock button on the key and remove the key from the ignition (do not release the unlock button)

4) while still holding the unlock button with the key removed press the lock button 3 times

5) release the unlock button on the remote and the door locks should lock and unlock if the proceedure has been carried out correctly

6) to program any other key(s) press and hold the unlock button on remote and again press the lock button 3 times but do not insert it into the ignition or turn the ignition on as done previous.

you may want to print these instructions and read them a few times before proceeding, if you muck up the process while programing keys, no harm will be done, you just have to start the process over. hope this is of some help, regards mark.

How to program the key for my bmw 750i model 1997 to lock/unlock the door

BMW 7-Series - Key Remote Programming
Three methods to try:
Method 1:
1. Working from within the vehicle and with the doors shut
2. Turn ignition to position 1 and back to off within 5 seconds.
3. Remove the key from ignition and press and hold the unlock button for 15 seconds during this time press the key lock button 3 times within 5 seconds.
4. Release both buttons.
5. Doors will lock and unlock to show correct programming has occurred.

Method 2:
To do this procedure you need to have one working key and one key that needs to be programmed.
1) Get in and close all doors.
2) Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds.
3) Remove the 1st key.
4) Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote receiver antenna.
5) Hold down the unlock button and press the lock button 3 times. Release the unlock button and the doors lock which confirms the operation.
6) Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc.
If it does not work, try doing the keys in opposite order. Key 2 then key 1, vs 1 then 2.

Method 3:
Alternate if you do not have a working remote
1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly 2. Remove key 3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.
4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds 5. Turn on ignition to finalise.
PLEASE NOTE: This programming procedure programs the remote control part of the key. Any transponder chip for the immobiliser (starting of car) will not be programmed and must be done by a specialist.
