The switch on the brake pedal arm sometimes wears out. The easiest way to get the old one out is to crush it to bits with a large pair if pliers of a small channel-lock. Then straighten the bracket if it is damaged, and snap in the new switch.
If you have an e46 (1999-2005 3-series) the ground on the tail lights tends to corrode in the plug at the tail light circuit board. BMW has issued a recall, but it is a little late because most folks have already fixed them by adding a second ground wire to each tail light. There is a tab on the ground circuit of the tail light that is a handy place to plug in the new ground wire.

there must be a short circuit which powers tail lights and brake lights. probably you have a dual filament bulbs which have both brake and tail light together. check for bulb, socket/or bulb housing and harness of that light.

Hello deezeesmeyo
Check fuse# 42 a 20amp fuse in the fuse block located under the hood on the right side of the engine compartment. If the fuse is ok, check the stoplight switch located under the left side of the
dash on the brake peddle bracket. Hope this is helpful.

That sounds like a faulty brake light switch located down on the brake pedal lever under the dash, or a damaged wire at the wire connector to the brake light switch. Here are some images of what the brake light switch looks like to help assist you.

Braking lights dont come on bulb is good what to check for

Check the brake light switch should be mounted on the upper brake pedal w/ a plug in wire. If it is shot, no brake lights.

Indicators and break lights do not work.

It could be the brake light switch. Check it for 12 volts. If its getting the volts it should be sending the volts to the lights when you press on the brake petal.

Non working brake lights in Nissan Altima

make sure the button is working, it may need to be replaced. with your foot off the brake peddle, it is on upper part of brake peddle arm. when you let off brake peddle it pushes button in to shut lights off. it may just be stuck in, spray a little lubracant on it if it's stuck and push in manually several times to loosen.

Brake lights

under the brake peddle is a switch. Lift the brake peddle upwards and you will see that the brake light goes out [requires two people; one to hold the peddle up, other to view the brake lights]. Restrengthen the spring tension on the brake peddle.

Should the lights remain ON after you lift the brake peddle up, unplug one of the wires to the brake peddle switch. At this point, the brake lights should be off. This basically will determine whether your switch is shorted or is just a peddle pressing down on the switch due to a bad spring.
