We have an audi a6 1.9tdi estate 2002, which we have been experience central locking problems with. The key fobs do not work tried changing batteries and resetting but does not work. The car has to be opened with the key and put into the ignition to open the rest of the doors. Sometimes the hazards flash after a while of being locked.

You really need a dealer to reset the anti theft and key recognition. There are very few independent shop who can successfully do this .
It does sound like you also might have drivers door micro switch fault...very common as the vehicle gets older . Have the shop can for faults in the body module. It will store a code if the door micro switch is not working.

There is only one fuse that mentions 'Locking', but also refers to the General Electrical Module (GEM). If you change the fob battery, you need to reprogram it to the vehicle. Or you could open any Transit around you. Lots of help below including resetting..
Locking your car up with the key, does just that . The FOB locks the doors and arms the anti thief system, That's when you here the beep sound. Have you changed the battery in your FOB ? It could just be dead.
I had a problem where my key fob did not lock or unlock the car, Renault Clio Dynamique, but the central locking button in the car did still work and engine turned over fine. Changed the key fob battery still nothing. Read online about disconnecting and reconnecting the car battery, (negative only) and hey presto it worked! All working fine now!
hi jamie,to reset the system, unlock the door/hold key over(windows will go down),then lock/hold key over(windows will go up/sunroof will close)then press unlock button on remote for 30 secs,RESET DONE.(if this dont work renew the battery in remote/reset again).geoff.
unlock car with key/hold over for 30 secs then lock car with key/hold over for 30 secs then unlock with remote hold button down for 30 secs.this should reset system.
will your passenger door open with the key and is it just one side that your windows are not working or both. if its just one side it might be your regulator motor in the door thats not working if its both it might be your central locking pump usually in the boot. however if both of them are working fine it could be that your key needs reprogrammed however i think the 1st 2 are more likely to be the problem.
