Check oil level on dipstick under hood with engine off. oil level will show on dipstick when removed.add oil as needed,DO NOT OVERFILL 1/4 inch low can be 1/4 quart low on oil. add oil as needed oil light comes on when low on oil,,,,,,worst case is no oil pressure,,,if oil is full,,DO NOT START AS YOU MAY HAVE A BAD OIL PUMP in which case if you run engine,,it blows.. if you have a oil light,check oil 1st,than if it's full,check oil sending unit,if good then move on to oil pump,,,,thank you for choosing fixya.comk

The oil light means that the oil pressure is low. If the car is serviced regularly and the oil filter is not blocked, it will be the pump. Or the oil pressure sensor itself is faulty. Be very careful, driving a car with no oil pressure will kill your engine very quickly.

Oil light stays on
You need to put the key on and push the gas pedal to the floor three times within five second to reset the oil life light.Some g.m.'s have a reset buttom in the fuse panel that needs to be pushed first and some don't.Check the owners manual under change oil for your specific year car.

TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO RUN WITH THE ENGINE OFF.FULLY PRESS AND RELEASE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THREE TIMES WITH IN FIVE SECONDS.YOU HAVE TO DO THIS MORE THAN ONE TIME.ITS NOT GOING TO RESET FIRST TRY BUT DO THIS PROCEDURE.UNTIL THE CHANGE ENGINE OIL LIGHT WILL FLASH WHILE THE SYSTEM IS RESETTING.TURN THE KEY TO OFF.WAIT A FEW SECONDS.START CAR UP TO SEE IF CHANGE OIL LIGHT COME BACK ON.IF YES YOU HAVE TO TRY THE RESET PROCEDURE AGAIN.

Oil light
If the oil light is on it's one of 2 things: You have no oil pressure, or the sending unit (also known as the oil pressure switch) is defective and is reading no pressure when there actually is normal pressure. You should always assume it means no pressure, because driving it this way will ruin the engine.
