Fuel Pump Relay is usually located in the engine compartment (under the hood) fuse/relay box. But, if you are having problems starting the car,....there is most likely a fuel shut off reset button in the trunk, on the right side, under the carpeting, on top of the rear wheel well. Look around in there. That's where it was in my 1999 Taurus.
The inertia switch is on either side of the dash near the doors. Look around the emergency brake pedal or around the heater box. I would check the fuel pump relay and the ECM relay.
PRESSURE RELAY SWITCH ,FUEL PUMP IN THE TANK YES ,YES BUT TRY THE FUEL RELAY SWITCH FIRST ,BECOSE WHEN IT GOES OUT IT SHUTS THE POWER FROM THE FUEL PUMP
With the crank no start, 4 things straight away to check.
1. The Fuel inertia Switch. This is in the passenger side kick panel, it is a button that you push down to reset. The kick panel is marked where it is, you might want to use a mirror to see it.
2. The fuel pump relay & Fuse. If you turn the key from off to run ( do not start ) with the door open, do you hear the fuel pump cycle ? If not, either the fuse or the relay is bad. My 2001 at ~ 36K miles had the fuel pump relay go bad, swapped with the trailer tow reverse relay, and it started right up. These are right next to each other in the fuse panel in the engine compartment - check you owners manual for the locations. If you did not get an owners manual with your truck ( purchased used ), you can download one from Ford : https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp
3. Fuel pump - Use a rubber mallet to thump the bottom of the fuel tank. If the fuel pump is on the way out, this could shake it loose, and start working again. Also could be a plugged fuel filter, when was the last time you changed it ?
4. Is the theft light flashing ? If you turn the key from off to run ( do not start ) does the theft light go out after ~ 5 seconds ?
Obviously there are other things that can cause this symptom, but in my little section of the world, these are usually the issue .
The fuel pump inertia switch that shuts off the pump in the case of an accident or impact is located under the right side of dash I have also
found them behind the right kick panel. There is also a fuel pump
shutoff relay under the hood on the left firewall, and a relay on the
right fender apron behind a plastic cover. Hope this helps.
Turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine. You should hear the fuel pump running for 5 seconds if working. This primes the gas to the injectors when doing this. If not heard running check the oil pressure switch for the 12 volts needed to run the fuel pump starts there on that harness. When the engine starts and the oil pressure reaches the normal pressure the computer shuts off that circuit and turns on the fuel pump relay to run the pump. The relay stays on till you shut the engine off
Inertia switch is located Under right side of dash, on heater plenum. Do you hear the fuel pump turn on when turning ignition on? you can hear pump by opening fuel door and put ear against while having someone turn ignition on, another test would be to install a fuel pressure gauge on scradder valve and reading fuel pressure - recommended
I have the same problem out of my 88 e-150 v8. It's the fuel pump. Two things: Wiggle the shifter make sure it is completely in park. For some reason the fuel pump doesn't work unless the shifter is just right. Second: Sometimes the fuel pumps don't just go out. They work intermitently. Open the door, turn the switch on. Then back off. You should be able to hear the fuel pump kicking on and off. Do it several times and you should hear if if is not working 100%
