Not sure about Rio 1.8 engine as they are normally 1.3 and 1.5 out in 2001, but maybe yours ha same engine as the Sephia.

Hi if u have motor stripped down u need 2 set it up on t.d.c thats top dead centre timings marks bring no1 cylnder up put outer timing cover on check harmonic balancer pully the notch on that lines up with zero mark on pully with the cam or cams u have to turn these so the no 1 valves are closed there should be dots or marks on the cam gears these should line up with marks on the back of timing plate behind timing gears if motor has balances shalfts rotate these till dots line up. hope this helps

Sounds like you have installed the belt out of time. Check your alignment marks and re-install the belt.

Timming belts and OBD2 codes.


Its possible the gears are not on the right marks.
Have you checked cam timing since replacing the second belt ?

2001 kia reo 4cyl. dohc replaced head gasket and had head re-surfaced put it back together and it acts like there is no compression


Did you recheck the engine valve timing (Timing Belt) after you finished? If so check it again. Timing has to be set on #1 top dead center. You probably know this if you did the head gasket.

I need a new timming belt on a 01 kia sephia how do i change it


Hi there,

Below are the procedures to remove the timing belt...

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Loosen power steering lock bolts and nuts accordingly and remove tension from power steering (P/S) and/or air conditioning (A/C) compressor drive belt. 3. Remove P/S and/or A/C drive belt.

4. Loosen generator mounting bolts and adjusting bolt. 5. Remove generator bolts.

6. Remove water pump pulley.

7. Remove crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plate.

8. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.

9. Turn crankshaft so that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.

10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover.


Do not move camshaft or crankshaft once timing marks have been correctly positioned.

11. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt.
12. Protect timing belt with a rag.
13. Remove tensioner pulley.

2002 kia spectra timming belt digram needed to verify timming marks. Dual overhead camshaft.


  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Remove power steering and air conditioning compressor drive belt by loosening power steering fasteners.
  3. Remove generator bolts and generator belt.
  4. Remove water pump pulley.
  5. Remove crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plate.
  6. Remove upper/lower timing belt covers.
  7. Turn crankshaft clockwise until "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley align with marks on cylinder head cover.

Can someone tell me how to set the timing marks a 2004 kia reo?


should be marks above each gear on the backing plate.make sure you turn the motor over by hand twice and the marks should still line up.

Timming belt markings


Kiatechinfo.com will get you all the information you need when working on a kia 2nd only to a chiltons or haynes manual.

For kiatechinfo.com register (its free) then select the information for your car make model engine. Then either do a search for timing belt or pick from proper items in cloumn to the left.
