Subaru Gearbox problem

I have a 1993 Subaru Liberty AWD Wagon Automatic with a WRX turbo engine in it with a RS turbo automatic gearbox, the problem I have is what I believe to be the gearbox locking, it wont happen all the time but when it happens both front wheels lock up and if I am to drive it starts to wind. The only way for me to stop this is to turn the car off and start it again and the problem goes away. Can any one please help me with this?? Thanks

There might be more than one issue here. its common for the early auto transmissions to not have the extra shims added to the center differential. This causes binding for the front axles and can damage a few parts. There was a recall for this many years ago. The other possibility is the valve body is manufunctioning and not fully engaging the gear your selecting. The fix is to get the valve body overhauled/rebuilt or replaced

Dear Customer,

Yes ,
you can do this with subaru, cause its genuine model for any type of any part modifications,

like Gearbox swap into place of 4.11 sti version 1

if you dont know how to work on a car, please refer to the trusty FSM (factory service manual). A subaru is simple enough that with $100 worth of hand tools you can do anything.

SOURCE: 1996 Subaru liberty gearbox/driveline problems

The AWD in subaru is designed to 'slip' or adjust to tight turns like you describe, this is to make the car drive smoothly while traveling straight, or when taking a tight turn. If you've ever driven a part time 4x4, all wheels are trying to turn the same revolutions, so with that type system you are not supposed to have it in 4x4 on dry pavement (no slippage) because it can damage the system, and you will have the exact symptoms you describe. What you are experiencing is similar to the part time system, in that the wheels are not adjusting to the different rotation in a tight radius turn. This is due to a problem with age and miles . I would say it's a warning of 'big bucks' as you state, not far down the road, as the awd system needs some serious repairs.

I need to replace the starter on my 1988 subaru gl wagon non turbo five speed and I have no idea where its located.

It will be close to the gearbox bell housing, where it connects to the engine. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) it's on the left side of the engine.
