I have a 1998 Lexus SC300 with 107,000 miles on it. There isnt any on/off button for the overdrive and no light on the dash that I can see of. When you drive the car with the transmission shift stick in D it doesnt go into overdrive and at 60mph the tact is reading about 2300 rpms. The overdrive did work when I first got the car about two years ago and the car has been sitting for over a year.

The Check Engine Light is on? Did you read the DTCs.

The second link has the answer, the first link says it is a known issue. It is times like this you need the Dealership or a good auto electrician.

If check engine light goes off then there is a trouble code stored. You'll need to retrieve the code w/ a scan tool and follow the proper diagnosis.

If the 2003 buick lesabre has a overdrive button It will be located on the shifting handle at the console. check where your hand is on the handle where you shift there will be a button on the side of your handle push it and watch your dash board where your speedometer is located and watch for any lights or indicator light will come on. or just call your dealer and ask the dealer for information on your vehical.

Are there any warning lights on in the dash, may a security warning light? If so you will need to reset the security system, refer to the owners manual or callthe local Lexus dealer for instructions.

the light that is coming on o/d off stands for overdrive which you need on hiway but not in town anything over 50 miles per hour you would want it on and there will be a button on the shifter or on the dash to turn overdrive on have a wonderful day

on the end of the lever that puts the car in gear is a button. This controls whether the overdrive is on or off. When overdrive is "off" a light comes on with OD showing on the dash. If the light is "off" then you are in overdrive. so when the light comes on push the button in the shifter handle. if you tow something you want the light to come back on "deactivating the overdrive" and you should see the dash light. You may just have a burnt out light bulb in the dash for this.

o/d stands for overdrive. most cars with automatic transmissions that have overdrive have a button ussually on the shifter not sure on the lexus where it is but try to find an overdrive on off button

There isn't anything wrong with your car. This is perfectly normal. I have a 2000 ES300 as well as other people that I know and it operates in the same way. Overdrive doesn't mean the same thing for every car or transmission. In our case overdrive is simply a reference to the top gear which is 4th gear. When you switch overdrive off(which is depressing the button causing the O/D OFF dash light to illuminate,) the highest gear becomes 3rd because you turned 4th gear or overdrive off. The application scenario for this is usually mountainous terrain where a lot of uphill driving makes it more feasible not to up shift into 4th gear while ascending and descending. It will not switch back to overdrive or 4th gear until you re-engage it by turning the overdrive back on or repressing the button. Again, when the O/D OFF dash light is illuminated, overdrive which is 4th gear is off and the highest gear will then become 3rd. It will never shift into 4th gear while this light is illuminated or overdrive is off. When you press the button and the O/D OFF dash light is NOT illuminated overdrive is on and therefore it will shift into 4th gear as usual. This applies to all 97-2001 ES300's and probably any other car you drive tat exhibits this same type of change when overdrive is turned off.
