When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis. I think you'll find P1529 (MIL On request from the TCM - Transmission Control Module.

My 1998 cavalier runs good but when going 55mph. The car starts jerking

Most likely it is the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Since 55 mph is a relatively constant speed for many drivers, the TPS get a work spot at that location and causes signal drop out to the ECM, resulting in a jerking feeling almost like a high speed intermittent engine misfire.

Car shaking and vibrating at 55 mph. and does it again at 65-70.

Hi:
Since your BMW 540 series is a rear wheel drive car, a common cause of that sort of vibration is often the U joints on your drive shaft. The vibration often only shows up and certain speeds.

It isn't a particularly expensive repair, but is something to have checked out!
