My brake lights stay on as I am driving, while my foot is OFF the pedal. 1996 XJS thank you

its the brake light switch....have it changed and if that does not solve the issue, check the ground wire to the brake light

There is a switch on the parking brake handle or foot pedal,witch ever it has,this is more than likely the problem.

Make sure the pedal is all the way up.
Check the brake fluid reservoir to see that it is filled to the proper level.

CHECK BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO SEE IF ITS TOUCHING THE BRAKE PEDAL.IF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR BRACKET LOOSE AND AWAY FROM BRAKE PEDAL BRAKE LIGHT WILL STAY ON.IF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH INTACT BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH NEED REPLACING.WHEN REPLACING BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR IT NEEDS ADJUSTING MAKE SURE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH PLUNGER TOUCHES BRAKE PEDAL ARM WHEN YOU RELEASE BRAKE PEDAL BRAKE LIGHTS SHOULD TURN OFF.

It sounds like the brake switch on the brake pedal arm is stuck its like a push button type switch when you press the brake pedal down it pushes the button in on the switch which makes the brake lights come on,when you take your foot off the brake pedal the button is supposed to come back out if it doesn't the brake lights will stay on.

the engine computer needs to be reset we had the same problem with our xjs our mechanic reset the computer to fix it

Replace the brake light switch above the brake pedal

possible culprits, neutral safety switch or brake pedal switch. likely culprit is the pedal switch. it is located on the brake pedal 2 inches above the pedal foot pad

must have a short somewhere. start at the high mount light and trace it back. I know that is not easy but thats the only way i know to find it.

check the bulbs and the wiring there may be a short
