My 2001 a3 quattro can get into gear but is getting difficult to select. when idle the whole car rattles which carries on when the car is moving. I have been told that it could be a broken side of a wish bone that is used to select gears (?? ). Any ideas and what sort of cost to repair. Is it worth it for the cost of the car?

First check the fluid level and make sure it is correct. If it's good you will then need to go to the dealership to have the codes pulled. I hope the problem is the fluid because it will be expensive otherwise.

Soun like a problem with the Torque Converter or valve solanoids stucked. FIrst checl trans fluid level in good conditions (without brun smell odor and clear colors).

SInce any noise from within the engine/gear box cannot be taken lightly, it is important that you will need a good look from a service shop. If you have been carrying out the scheduled service in accordance with Toyota timings, there will not be an issue. You could check out if the noise is external,otherwise get you car to the authorised Toyota centre for an estimate. This will be better than trying out/ stipping and then waiting for spares. Hard to say what it is without a visual inspection. Take it to the nearest repair shop as soon as possible.
I don't think its a suspension issue cause especially in an A3 you would see it in the curb height and feel it in the ride.

You didn't say which model or engine.
Check for loose heat shields, broken engine or transmission mounts.

have you checked the brake lights for operation ?
if they don't work than it is your brake light switch located on the pedal support bracket.

There is no change interval as it is chain driven

Most likely a one of the two shafts that carry the gears in the inside of the gear box has fallen down. The cause of this, is the bearing at the front of the shaft has worn out and the shaft dropped. The gears are unable to mesh anymore.
