Trying to find out if there is a common problem with the air bag in my 2005 gmc sierra. the service air bag light is on. also trying to find out what the approx. cost at the dealership would be to fix the problem.

The air bag light is only part of the srs system
You have seat belts,seat sensors,air bags,all sorts
of sensors,so it could be any thing
In most cases you would need factory service manuals,
if you were to diagnose yourself, as abs codes & trouble
charts are not an internet source of info, as with generic
obd codes
You start at a repair shop with professional software to get the
codes,then they have to go into a data base to find trouble
charts to follow.

Any mechanic with a scanner that is air bag compatable. If your system doesn't have an issue, the light will go off...you have a problem, so get it scanned to see what is up.

no there r no servicable parts on the air bag system...u need to return the truck to a qualified service repair center for the repair....they will be able to pull air bag codes an then properly repair ur air bag system

That sounds about right "IF" they actually need replacing. Most times it's just a matter of resetting SRS lights. I would find another competent shop and ask them to reset your SRS lights and see if it stays OFF. If your vehicle was in an accident, I would agree with above diagnosis but if it wasn't just have another shop try resetting lights for you.

In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to disarm the airbag system can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury disconnect the battery 30 minutes prior to start of work.

Service air bag means something is amock. The first step is to PULL the error code. Then you will know here to look. Often there is a sensor, front and center that gets it's connections damaged by road salts. But do not parts replace, be sure that you have the correct item...Pull the code(s)

if you do not have a switch, it cannot be turned off.

the system will need to be scanned to get the code. This will pinpoint the problem. These trucks are common for crash or collision sensor failing

It likely is a bad passenger air bag. Did you try switching it back to off on the switch,and unhooking the battery for 5 minutes.
