My 1998 Chrysler Town & Country starting is disabled. Had a mobil locksmith come out to re-program the keys but he said that the reason the vehcile wouldn't start had nothing to do with the security system. I have had it towed to a garage who had replaced the starter approximately three months ago. When the mechanic there went to start the vehicle, it started up right away. My wife has spoken to a shop and they told her that the problem has to do with a microchip in the security system. Any thoughts?

Disconnecting the battery is never a good idea as it breaks the code paring between the key, the BCM / ECM and Immobilizer Module. Always charge a car battery in the car without removing it. Even a dead battery has enough volts to keep the ECM / BCM programming alive. Have all the keys done at the same time. If you only have one key, have another chip key cut and programmed. You don't mention a second key, and we get so many people here who lose their only key and ask how to bypass and hot-wire. The answer to that is "you can't".

Programming requires knowledge of a code which requires a call to the manufacturer even by a locksmith. And it takes time for the locksmith to get a call back. Probably a fee is involved even for the locksmith, something the locksmith likely passes along as part of the bill. But such is a less expensive route than getting the dealer to do it. I don't think you are going to otherwise encounter someone who knows how to program it as they would have to know the code/pin. I am assuming you have not just tried to replace the battery in the fob.

if you have the battery handy , replacing the old immediately should not alter the programming
the program will not hold indefinitely but replacing is a may be 30 second job and most key fobs hold the program for a minute

if the key wont turn you can try this a locksmith showed me spray key hole with a small amount of wd40 put key in take the wooden end of a hammer handel and tap end of key not too hard.sometimes this will work until you can get fixed

you need to call a locksmith to come to your home. They will replace one or more of the tumblers/cylinders inside the ignition key area. The EXACT same thing happened to me. The Chrysler dealership wanted to charge me over $400 to fix the problem. My wonderful mobile locksmith knew exactly what was srong the nanosecond I mentions the make and model! $49.00 later - FIXED! good luck!
