I don't think its a common problem. Things can just happen.
Is it a rear door? Child locks activated and maybe the plastic clip on the outside handle broke.
Or for whatever door, the latch could be faulty. They are pretty much levers and latches and over time with lots of use parts get worn and rounded so after while they wont work.

Did you double check to see if the child lock switch on the sliding door is up or down?

take the bezel off around th door handle. take the screw out of the armrest. pull out the window switches and pull out on the door handle and pull up .disconnect the last two plugs then you can see the whole door handle

Go to http://www.hmaservice.com/ and register (vehicle by VIN). Afterward, you'll have access to technical information (manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, etc) about your vehicle.

There is two bolts that hold the window slider thing in place. One just below one of the door handle nuts inside the door and the other is on the outside of the door (on the inside of the car). Once these are removed it enables you to move that mech out of the way to get to the other bolt.
I undone the 3 latch screws to give me a bit more movement in the rod that connects to the handle too.
This should give you enough room to get to that other nut and clip the rod into the handle once installed.
Once handle is installed simply just slide the window mech back up into position and bolt back in.

sounds like the rod from the outside hande is no longer attached to the latch. probably broke at the handle. you will need to remove the inner door panel and inspect.you should be able to isolate the problem then.
