My 2004 ptcruiser idles high and makes loud bang when I put it in gear

Manual transmission ... clutch worn. Automatic transmission ... that will happen if tickover is too high.
Fix the tickover issue, probably mass airflow sensor or air leak, then gears should sort themselves out.

2001 jetta automatic transmission does not down shift or shift into overdrive

Once again, not enough information given. How many miles on unit? When you say does not downshift do you mean when you press hard on accelerator pedal, or when you slow down? When you say does not shift into overdrive do you mean high gear or torque converter does not lock? The cars are know for transmission problems and while sometimes you get lucky, usually they require a rebuild or replacement. How often do you replace the fluid and filter?

You might check your transmission mounts; you have an upper "pendulum" mount, and a "dog-bone" mount underneath.

1. Requirements for check:
1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface.
1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.

1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.

Run the fault codes to determine the problem area ( TR, TCM, VSS ,solenoids and servos) check for wiring harness problems and water in the connections
