Hi Clucas, If you're talking about a cold engine, the vehicle is fitted with an automatic 'up idle' system. Depending on how cold the ambient temperature is. The colder it is outside the higher the idle, until the engine reaches normal operating temp. The engine should then settle down to the correct idle speed. If however the cold start raises the speed to more than 1350, have a scan carried out. If the idle speed is always at a high rpm, do the same.A leakage of air into the intake manifold can also cause the latter problem. A leakage however will not be evident via a scan. My van is idle high i cleaned the throttle boady and it idle down the a few hours later its high idle again why i replaced two sensor and still idle high

Hi Alexandra, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair

There are several things that can cause high idle, but the 2 most common problems are as follows.

(1) You could have a vacuum leak somewhere on the engine. Here is how to check for that issue. Here's what I want you to do: Buy a can of CARB Cleaner and while the engine is running spray around the Intake Manifold, the manifold is the thing the throttle body sit on. Also spray around all the vacuum line as well. If while spraying there is a change in the idle speed then you have found your leak. If there is no change then move on to step 2.

(2) Sometimes when you have a high mileage vehicle parts begin to ware out or can also begin to stick in place. Here something you can check. Idle Air Control Motors can start sticking from corrosion build up and can cause a high idle issue. Here what I want you to do. Start the engine and let it idle, while its idling I want you to tap on the Idle Air Control Motor If it idles down to normal idle speed replace the motor. The motor mounts onto the throttle body and most of them are round. Once you replace it and start the engine you'll notice that its idling real high, :This Is Normal, just let it idle until the engine controller resets the idle speed to normal.

Hope this helps and should you need further help please visit my auto repair website. http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

The idle is sticking on park

High idle speed is usually caused by a sticking idle air control valve or a vac leak. The computer controls idle speed by how much air is allowed into the intake manifold.
is the check engine light on ?

My 1994 olds cutlass surpreme idle at 2000 rpm .why ?

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You may need to adjust your idle. It may be set too high. If not, you could have a bad idle control sensor. This would cause your vehicle to idle high. It may be a defective map sensor. Make sure the cable is not sticking, which would cause the vehicle to idle high. It may need adjusted or replaced.

Toyota Corolla CSi hatch revving too high

Some possibilities:
--the choke cable or the choke linkage on the carburetor is sticking, holding the revs too high.
--the gas pedal linkage, the pedal cable, or its linkage to the carburetor are sticking.
--the engine computer (if it has one) is failing, or has poor connections, or isn't grounded properly.
--various other sensors (if you have them) could be failing.
--the mechanism (computerized or mechanical) calling for more fuel to the carburetor when the air conditioning (if you have it) is turned on could be sticking or not working properly.
You should be able to test most of these possibilities while the car is standing still, with the engine running. Start with the choke -- have a helper move the knob and see if the engine responds properly, especially in the "off" position. Then have the helper operate the gas pedal while you watch what's going on with the carburetor.
Have your helper turn the a/c on and off. If you see a mechanical linkage to the carburetor move when the a/c is turned on, it should move back to its original position when it's turned off.
If any of these linkages (including the gas pedal linkage under the dash) are sticking, try spraying the affected area with a lubricant (like WD-40). If that doesn't help, spray lubricant into the cables, or replace them.
If all else fails, carefully check all vacuum lines in the engine compartment. An intermittent leak (or blockage) could be affecting engine speed.
