06 Chevy Cobalt power steering msg and check engine light on

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt. Power Steering is coming up on the message center and the check engine light came on. The power steering is not working and the transmission is shifting hard. I took it to Auto Zone and when they hooked it up they could not get a reading. Told me to take it to the dealer. Would like to figure a way to fix it myself. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I have the same problem. I lose power steering and get a "power steering" message on the message display. I took it to the dealer who charged me $123 to look at the car, then told me it was a short in electronic power steering module and that it would cost over $1000. I only have 42000 on this car. I hate this car.

I TOTALLY AGREE...THIS VEHICLE IS THE BIGGEST PIECE OF ****!! My engine light just came back on...I haven't had a problem since the end of August...the first time I had the power steering issue was last December...needless to say the problem was not solved because the same problem came back...my car was in a Chevrolet Shop for a good part of the Spring and most of the summer...even the mechanics there were stumped...about a week ago the shop manager was calling us to see how the car was doing because lord and behold they had ANOTHER vehicle with the same problem... THIS IS TRULY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT IS BEING COVERED UP AND SWEPT UNDER THE CARPET...right now just the engine light is on but normally different things light up, it says power steering and the car bucks and jerks....NOT SAFE AT ALL...we filled with the Better Business Bureau, Highway Safety but apparently nothing is going to be done until some one is killed because of this MAJOR PROBLEM... GM sent us a check to cover 3 months worth of car payments for the inconvenience of not having our car for just a long period and I believe they just want to keep it hush hush...we have a binder full of work forms from each time our car went in...I don't think GM wanted the dealership shop to keep those records on file because that is why they were calling to find out if we still have the car and if we have had anymore problems because they could not remember what was done with our vehicle...it is 6:30pm and the shop is closed but you can bet I will be calling first thing in the morning...if anyone is having this problem the cost should not be coming out of their pockets...GM should be stepping up to the plate and taking care of this situation...Sad enough they haven't done so yet????

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt my check engine light is on. I took it to Auto Zone and they tested it. The results of the test was no code found. My light is still on and i'm staring to get bad gas mileage. That is not the only thing my key won't come out of the ignition.

i have a 2006 cobalt with 41000 miles on it! I recently got the power steering message and my power steering will stop working periodically. My front two door speakers also stopped working when it was fresh out of warranty so im screwed on that too. The speakers aren't blown and we checked the connections so there is no telling what is wrong with them!! Needless to say this is the LAST chevy car i will EVER own!!1

i commute 130 miles a day and when you are not able to change lanes fast enough to miss a semi coming down a hill that is pretty bad, i hope Chevy does not wait until someone dies to fix these that are not under warranty

I have a 2006 that on the way home tonight the steering locked up and the control panel advised it was "power steering". To my surprise when I researched this online how many of the same issues exist.
I have 500 miles shy of the warranty expiring and will be at the dealership tomorrow. This should be fun.

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2009

Same Problem. First started after replacing the Steering arms by the dealer. It is a 2005 and di not have the issue undtil just this week with the power steering going out. Restart the car and the light on the dash goes out and is fine. I agree this is a very common issue from what I have read and They need to do a recall.

I have an 08 and I got the message this morning on my way to work. Its a brand new car and im very frustrated. Long story short im covered and the dealership better do a good job

  • Anonymous Apr 07, 2009

Power steering not working Unit has power it's just no good needs to be replaced this is such a common problem there needs to be a recall or class action law suit either will do which does GM think will be cheaper.

I am having the same problem. just got my 06 cobalt fixed after my clutch went out. the mechanic some how broke the module in it and had to replace it. since then I have had message power steering on my car come up. i turn the engine off and it does just fine for a few blocks. am getting frustrated. cannot afford a new car but really wish at this point someone would steal my car.

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2009

My power steering shut off five times on the way home, during what is usually a 5 minute drive. I am ready to blow this car up.

  • Anonymous Apr 20, 2009

So I fell victim just as everyone else has. I hit 45,000 miles and my power steering went out and it cost $900 to fix it.

In order to get Chevy to recall this problem we all need to call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236 or visit http://www.SaferCar.gov It will only take a few minutes.

I made a video and put it on youtube to help build awareness on the subject:

Remove the (-) negative battery cable for 15-30 min. this will or should reset the alarm codes. It may help or may not. The Service Engine light is very sensitive to all problems. If it works, the light should go off.
GOOD LUCK & PLEASE BE SAFE !

I have a 05 and I replaced the power stearing ststem on 2 hrs. fist you need to know that the car uses an electric motor to help steer the car. the part can cost anywhere between 50.00 - 800.00, 50-75 if you go to a junk yard and get the art yourself and install it yourself. or you can get it done by the dealership for around 1000.00 with labor. what makes it so expensive is you have to buy the part as a kit which includes, electric motor, steering colum, steering wheel and hardwere. when only needing the electric motor. but at the junkyard i was able to get a 07 cobalt powersteering motor and everything for 75. and i didnt even have to take the part out but i did get to choose which cobalt it came out of. if you live in pinellas county fl go to starkey auto there the only ones who have cobalts in pinellas county.

This is a major problem and I too have reported the issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Please take the time and do the same. They can be contacted online at safercar.gov or BY PHONE: Call the Hotline, Monday-Friday 8am to 8pm at (888) 327-4236 , TTY:(800) 424-9153. Is anyone aware of a class action lawsuit?

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2009

Are you serious... if read and google you will find over 200 more complaints. This is an issue only GM/Chevy can fix. Report it to www.safercar.gov and the Department of Consumer Affairs. I have been battling this issue for 2 months.

For an '06, you should be under warranty by the dealer unless you bought it outright. Have the dealer look at it. There are a lot of problems with the Cobalt so check with the dealer about known defects and/or recalls.

On March 10 2010 General Motors/Chevrolet instituted a recall of 1.3 million compact cars. Many Chevy Cobalts are included in this recall. Call your GM dealer with your vin no. to see if your car is covered.

90% of these problems are caused by faulty CAN Bus connectors. To check Can bus problems 1.Disconnect battery 2. with digital ohm meter, probe pins 6 and 14 of data link connector under dash. Ohms reading should be in the 60-65 ohm range. 3. wiggle all can bus connectors. i.e. power steering module,TCM,BCM,PCM etc while watching ohm meter.Any sudden spikes in resistance or drop out identifies faulty connection.Clean connection with good contact cleaner then retest. I've repaired several of these issues this way. NOTE: all CAN bus wires are tan/tan with black stripe. hope this helps! Another tip...always check power steering module connection first..usually I don't have to go any further...

Any or all of these: Chimes sound, Power steering fails, Tach and speedometer erratic, clicking noises from center console, hard trans shifting, engine stalls when coming to a stop, dash-board warning lights flash/illuminate. DTC codes U2100 and P0700, (P0101 will appear if engine stalls multiple times)? Replacing my transmission control module solved all the above problems

Hi, I recently just purchased a cobalt ls 2006 from a friend. she had a recall when she owned it with the power steering and it was fixed. but was it a faulty? Lastnight on Christmas I experienced a stiff wheel and I wasn't able to turn left or right. The oil is good, everything is excellent. the engine light is on and I can't seem to figure out what it could be. from reviews I have read there is no way to fix this and it's unknown what it could be. I'm really upset with this seeing as I purchased it only two days ago and it was fine until lastnight. I have recall papers and everything. What could this be? and is it safe to drive it? will the stiff wheel happen while I am driving? help me please. I am upset. I have a feeling it is the steering pump which I'm going to look into. but I want advice..

How to identify the power steering motor in the

Look where your power steering resivor is located...trace the hoses coming out the side or bottom to the pump on the engine. Sometimes the resivor for the pump is drectly above the pump itself but unlikely with your vehicle. Replacing it will be a joy for you (not really) as you will have to release tension from the main motor belt, remove that from the power steering pump and then manage to have enough room to get to it to replace it.

Power steering on 2006 chevy cobalt

There is NO power steering fluid in a 06 Cobalt. It is electric! This is a flaw that GM is not willing to come to terms with. Try topix.com for the list of over 350 people that this has happened to. Also, the dealership wants YOU to pay for it. There should be a recall. VERY dangerous!

Power steering goes out

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles;
2005 model year Pontiac Pursuit; 2005-2006 model year Pontiac G4; 2006 model year Pontiac G5 Pursuit; and 2007-2010 model year Pontiac G5
vehicles equipped with electric power steering. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at
any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will sound and a "Power Steering" message will be displayed in the
Driver Information Center to inform the driver of the condition. Steering control will be maintained, as the vehicle defaults to a manual steering mode.
If power steering assist is lost, it may require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, for example, below 15 mph (25 km/h). Unless a driver
compensates for this additional effort, it may increase the risk of a crash.
