Most squealing can be attributed to a worn drive belt. When they become worn, they get slick and slip instead of grabbing the pulleys. This can also be a sign of a stuck pulley ie harmonic balancer,AC compressor, or power steering unit.

Loud noise burning smell

Most likely a belt problem or a worn out tensioner. You left off the year, make, model and engine so it's a guessing gamet. Read this post on how to track down the source of noise

On start up loud squel from one of belt driven components my it may be a top guide wheel the sound goes away but still can be heard under hood when open

Belt squeel is usually from a belt that is to loose and the pulley is slipping against the rubber creating the "squeel".
You will need to locate the belt tensioner and tighten it until you get a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch vertical flex of the belt at the center point between the pulley's.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl ES underhood squeal on right side

Be gentle with my rating. I am a long ways away. It sounds like a fan belt. You should pop the hood next time and see how it sounds when you have the squeeling going on. Fan belts will squeel until the get warmed up and then stop because the heat makes them grab the way they are ment too. Let me know, Raz

2001 VW bug makes what sounds like a squealing noise when it starts. Sounds like it is coming from under the hood.

Sounds like the alternator belt is loose. Re-tension it then replace the belt as soon as possible as its likely to have been put under a lot of strain since it was slipping and causing the squeeling sound.

My 2001 ford taurs is squeeling what is the problem

I have a similar problem on my 99 OHV 3.0L. On mine, it's the a/c compressor. Hope this helps a little. Sounds like there's a bird trapped under the hood.
