How do i change a shfter knob on 1998 vw passat , its automatic

You probably did it wrong lol their was probably a mechanical piece you didn't hook up. (very essential) have a friendly Mechanic come take a look. Always have a mechanic friend.

VW code is true P1784 this is a shift up/shift down. Open wire/short to ground.. Its a shift problem caused by a wire that either opened, disconnected, or has shorted,

you have fuse number 6 for that circuit problem could be in the drivers door control module if fuse check out okay.

The dipstick is marked ATF Engine Oil and is close to the oil. Pull this dipstick out. Wipe it off with a clean paper towel. Look at the fluid on the paper towel. Transmission fluid needs replacing if it is brown. Fresh transmission fluid is translucent red.

Take the measuring stick from sleeve, place a funnel into sleeve (two dollars at your favorite auto parts) and add tranny fluid to level. Do not overfill.

Idle is automatically set&monitored with a timing sensor on the camshaft, i found my engine(1.8 20v turbo) would idle low then go high and almost stall sometimes and all i did was remove the fat black pipe on the throttle and clean inside the throat with a cotton rag dabbed in wd40.Hold the throttle open manually and clean on and around the throttle plate as the oil burnt&recycled creates a hard carbon that stops the throttle working correctly.When did you last change the sparkplugs, air filter, oil and oil filter and remove damp from the spark plug area using wd40 on surfaces applied with a cotton rag.These contribute all to your problem.As you dont state milage etc it could be a worn engine or slipped cambelt(1-2 teeth can make a slight diffirence).

Pull off the door panel and then lift up the door lock knob by the rod as far as you can while at the same time pulling on the door handle.

We are not a parts service, but try an internet search for used VW parts, there are many VW only wrecking yards, that is your best chance of finding it. Also call VW and see if they sell a rebuilt module.
