As long as you have head gasket problems your going to get that notice,, what you have is not blockage, But a serious problem that needs addressing, leaking head gaskets will take that leaking water and turn it to steam as you drive, and blow it right out the tail pipe of your car,, if its a small leak you won't even notice this until the gasket finally blows out enough to cause damage that will leave you stranded at best . they do have head gasket additives that might get you past for a very short time, I've never had any luck with them, since they just put a band aid on a severe cut

No heat to the interior of the car indicates a closed thermostat-the coolant level warning is controlled by the sensor in the surge tank, it is either disconnected or malfunctioning. cleaning the tank itself can sometimes get it working again, or look for another in a local junkyard (much less expensive than the dealer). Your overheating can very well be due to the thermostat, so changing it might solve a couple of problems-and the Northstar engines do have head gasket problems due to streaching head bolts that also damage threads, a permanent repair is to replace the head bolts with 'timesert' :

Low coolant light stays on until system heats

Your overflow tank(aka coolant recovery reservoir) is low on coolant. The coolant expands when warm and raises the level in the tank, which turns off your light. Top off the reservoir (when cool) to the "Full Cold" line. If you have to keep adding on a regular basis, then you have a leak somewhere in your cooling system, could even be the reservoir itself.

Car fogs up and the heat is very weak. Could it be a thermostat?

First check that the coolant level in the radiator is full to the top. Wait until the engine is absolutely cold before removing the rad cap.
Secondly, check that the overflow or surge tank is full to the indicated mark on the side of that tank after checking the rad level.
Thirdly the temperature gauge in the dash should be at least 1/3 to 1/2 after 20 minutes of driving.
If the coolant is dirty it could be a plugged heater core.
If the coolant was clean I would suspect a faulty thermostat.

Cooling system

Raise the car front end as high as possible with a floor jack, fill the coolant tank to the top, run the engine until it reaches just short of overheating, shut it down and run water over the radiator, this will burp the air out. Repeat as needed. Don't let the coolant recovery tank run dry during procedure.

Low coolant level indicator keeps coming on even though coolant is full

I don't believe this is a reset issue. The sensor is in the overflow tank. Make sure the level is at or just a bit above the level indicator. The sensor may be bad or blocked, but I think this is where your issue is. The sensor shows on the side of the overflow tank.

Engine coolant hot sensor and idle engine sensor appear 5 minutes after driving. When I park car and shut it off I hear bubbling noises

Hello: The first thing is check the coolant level. Do this on a cold engine, if engine is a 4.9 check both the radiator and the overflow tank. Make sure they are full of coolant. If it is a Northstar engine then make sure the surge tank is full, this may require checking the tank again after bring the engine to operating temperature then let it cool off. DO NOT OPEN COOLING SYSTEM ON HOT ENGINE it could cause serious burns to you.

I borrowed a friends car (2002 Thunderbird). The coolant gauge spikes from acceptable range up to hot "H", red light comes on for about 20 sec and then turns off and gauge goes back to normal. ...

What you are describing sounds like there is air in the cooling system-Start the engine when it is cold with the cap off of the overflow and turn the heater up to full blast-make sure there is coolant in the reservoir, and keep an eye on the gauge, At the point where the thermostat opens, the level in the overflow should drop-top off the overflow filling to the 'full hot' mark on the side of the tank. Put the cap back on and drive it, watching the gauge. If you still have issues, you may have a problem with a malfunctioning thermostat. If it is alright after doing this, make it a point to check the level when it is cold again later to be sure the coolant tank is up to the 'fill cold' line.

Coolant lights go on and coolant reservoir leaking

Hi there susankk26,

There are three things that could cause the coolant light to be flashing all the time.
  1. Low coolant level in radiator or surge (overflow) tank
  2. Dirty or gummed up sensor
  3. Bad sensor
Guess where the coolant level sensor is located -> The overflow tank. The sensor can't be removed from the tank. The tank is leaking.

Replace the tank.

You can save a few bucks by doing it yourself. You can find one cheap at an auto salvage yard. They're pretty straight forward to switch out too.
