HeI have a battery drain problem in my Lincoln 2004. I recently purchased the vehicle at an auction. Two very experienced mechanics have declined working on diagnosing this problem because they both said the electronics on the vehicle are very complicated. To attempt to deal with the problem, I pulled the fuses for the electronic parking brake and the cigarette lighter. I pulled the fuse for the electronic parking brake because the brake was doing strange things. From time to time when I was starting the vehicle, the parking brake would engage on its own and it was finicky turning it off. I also experienced a bit of this problem when I checked out the car the day before the auction but attributed the problem to my lack of experience in how to deal with the electronic parking brake and its control switch. My speculation is that the previous owner had this battery drain problem and because the electronic parking brake was acting oddly before and after I bought it, I considered that it was a prime suspect of being the focal point of the battery drain problem. I pulled the cigarette lighter fuse, because I read on the internet that a possible source of electrical drains is an overused accessory socket which has become loose over time. Since I asssumed that the cigarette lighter fuse controlled the accessory socket electricity, I thought that removing the fuse would eliminate a second suspected source of the problem. In a day or so (today is Monday, September 5/11) I will check the voltage in the battery to see whether it has dropped down from 12 volts. I charged the battery last night. Any thoughts on other possible sources of the electrical drain problem and suggestions? A neighbour who restores old vehicles gave me the name of a fellow who specializes in auto electronics. If my recent experiment does not work out, I intend to bring the vehicle to him for a possible diagnosis. My worry is that diagnosing this type of problem would be time consuming and quite expensive and perhaps not worth it given the age of the vehicle. Incidently, the Lincoln LS has 129,000 kilometers (80,000 miles). Thanks in advance for your help.

Excellent description and repair thought process!! Yes the other mechanics probably saved some sanity by passing on the job. A test light used in series on fuse box will help speed along your fuse pulling technique. just a few minor thing to contemplate are lights that you cant see. check trunk light and hood maintenance light that are supposed to be off when closed but might not be. Check car at night for any lights on at all, Have charging system tested, alternator could be bad causing drain. Good luck.

I have a 2004 lincoln town car. Headlight needs repair, bulb out. Ny mechanic states balast is shot. Already replaced bulb. Is there a balast on this car ?

The stock halogen headlamps that came with the car DO NOT use a ballasting system. However, many owners upgrade to aftermarket xenon headlamps for a brighter output which do require a ballast.

Several Electical Problems w/2004 Navigator

That auto has lots of mini computers to keep everything working. I would try a new battery after leaving the old battery disconnected for an hour. If everything works, run test light to determine if and where there is a drain on the battery.
