Sounds like you have a short in the steering colume causing the smell and the smoke.is there something that is not working that was before this happened that is controlled by the switches on the colume.this can indicate what switch is bad and causing the problem.it will have to be checked out to know what item in the colume is the problem.

Smoke from 95 Camaro steering column

Where ever there's smoke, there's fire. This could be the multifunction switch arching and burning the lubrication in the assembly. Multifunction meaning, one switch that operates the turn signal wipers, cruise etc.

Smell of Burning Plastic

you could have a short in the wire harness that runs up your steering column. i would check under the dash for worn, frayed or burnt wires immediately. you have a great potential for an electrical fire. good luck. please rate this solution
