went into a store for about 15 min. and when I returned to the car the remote/key unlocked as usual but when I inserted the key into the ignition, the key would not turn!

You have to remove the overhead control unit (front dome lamp assembly) to gain access to the sunroof motor(link below) You can then put an allen wrench/socket into the drive motor for the sunroof and turn to close. This works if the sunroof motor has failed. If the problem is the switch, you might get lucky by pointing the key at the IR pickup on the driver's door handle and holding the lock button. Assuming that you mean that when you push a button on the key fob, nothing happens, you most likely need to replace the battery in the fob. If you aren't comfortable doing this yourself, you can take it to a key shop or the dealer.

You need to replace the door lock assembly. They go bad often on these vehicles. The door panel needs to come off to access the assembly. Not very easy to do unless you know what you are doing.
I had the same problem with my 2001 E320. Roadside assistance came to my house and said it was a problem with the key. Ordered a new key (cost about $220 from Keys European in Van Nuys, CA) and the key worked. When I went to dealer to pick up the key, I spoke to a service consultant and he said that hes seen that problem before and replacing the key wont do anything (even though it did work). He said something about a ESI (something like that) and said that parts only on that cost about $600. So first thing you should try is replacing your key. Hope I helped.
