Dear Lair,
Let's look for 2 things, one more likely than the other.
First would be the ignition switch shorting out.
I have not heard of such, should be a rare thing.
Second would be a shorted out wire, inside or outside the wiring harness between the ignition switch and the motor..
If you could find a super mechanic, see if they could hot wire the truck and by-pass the harnesses.
Usually starters can be jumped to start the truck.
Some times either salt damage (if you are up north) or a car wreck improperly fixed can result in a shorted out wire ( pinched).
God bless your efforts.
Check the drain on the battery, with the ignition on, it could be a faulty starter motor or a bad earth, check the earthing strips for damage, and the shell earths. battery could be arcing in the starter motor this would heat up the motor very quick and flatten the battery.

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function
SOURCE: no electrical power after replacing battery
I've had similar problems with my cars, and everytime it was a bad ground or power wire, or corrosion on the terminals. Get a wire brush and clean both battery connecters..even a little corrosion can cause a no power situation. If you have a test light, connect the ground of the test light to the negative cable of the battery and touch light to the positive cable...if the test light doesn't light up, then you have a break or lose connection in your ground wire. Trace the battery ground to the engine block and clean that also...the smallest thing can interupt power...hope this helps..

The starter is found under front end.. Near where the moter meets the trani - you will see the flywheel (a big round gear) the starter connects to the flywheel to turn the motor..
Disconnect the battery..
Disconnect wires from starter..
Should be 2 bolts that hold the starter in - remove them..
The starter goes in only one way so you cant mess it up..
Rate well ;o)
