I am timing a 2005 Cadillac STS 4.6 northstar went by gm info and re timed 3 times with bad results. I had all my marks lined up but I think I am messing up with the flats on the cams where do they need to be? SI shows both banks up but when I took it apart one bank was up and one down I used the holding tool and left it that way. the only reason for removing the chains was a nylon foot fell off of one of the tensioners and ate into the chain so I changed all tensioners and chains and guids. I can not get it in time!!!

The crank has to be on tdc for the piston position
on the right hand bank ( left side looking at the front of the engine , the top most cam is the inlet cam and the letters RI will be at the 9 oclock position on the top side of the shaft boss on the cam gear the lower cam gear will have the letters re in the same position
on the other bank the top cam gear will have li at the 3 oclock position and the lower cam gear will have re in the same position
use the position as 90 degrees to the head and taken through the cam shaft center

Most affordable possible solution is to give it a transmission tune-up. Transmission number one problem is neglect. Change the oil, filter and pan gasket. You'll probably need to take the pan off, very messy job. Take the pan off, carefully scrape all old gasket material, clean the pan with dish washing soap, dry it completely, put a bottle of Lucas for transmission in the pan. Put some Indian Head Gasket Shellac Compound on the pan gasket surface. Set the gasket on the pan, keep the gasket on the pan for three minutes then install. Don't put any Shellac on the transmission gasket surface nor on the gasket. Follow recommended directions for filling the transmission with oil.

SOURCE: where is bank 2 sensor one on a Cadillac CTS?

Bank 2 Sensor 1 is on the driver side - follow the right side of the engine down the headers which attaches to the catalytic converter. The o2 Sensor you're asking about (Bank 2 Sensor 1) is before the Catalytic. The o2 Sensor after the Catalytic is Bank 2 Sensor 2. Bank 1 Sensor 1 is on the passenger side as well as Bank 1 Sensor 2.

2005 Cadillac STS V8 - P0420/P0300/P0174

There are two easy tests for the catalytic converters. One, use a infrared pyrometer and measure the temperature of both catalytic converters and compair the readings. There should not be much difference between the two if both are flowing correctly. Another easy test is to drill a 1/4" hole before each cat and check for excessive back pressure.

I have 67k on my sts and im hearing what sounds like a sloppy timing chain chattering from the right side of the engine as im sitting in the drivers seat. Im aware that there are 3 chains in this motor and...

Yes, it is possible. Most probable cause is a timing chain guide that is broken or the hydraulic chain tensioner is bad. No way to tell without going into engine. Unfortunately Northstars are not fun for the novice, or even slightly motivated weekend mechanic to tackle.

Can the Head Gaskets be replaced on a 2001 Cadillac Seville STS Northstar without removing the engine? I am thinking about buying one that needs a head gasket replaced.

Yes , but it is very time consuming and if you have never replaced head gaskets before then I would not suggest that this vehicle be your first.

SETTING TIMING ON 2000 NORTHSTAR ENGINE

Setting the camshaft timing isnecessary whenever the camshaft drive system has been disturbed, meaning the relationship between any chain and sprocket has been lost.Correct timing exists when the crankshaft and intermediate shaftsprocket timing marks are in alignment and all 4 camshaft drive pinsare perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cylinder head surface.
