There is a big short in the wires that are connected to the steering wheel. Uncovering the wires requires the steering wheel to be removed. The air bag needs to be deactivated first. Special pullers are necessary to take the wheel off. Next is to remove all the screws that hold the plastic covers in place. This will expose most of the wiring. finding a pinched or bare wire should be easy to see.
1992 what ???? if you have air bags you must first disconnect battery ,remove air bag and horn assembly next you'll need to remove the steering wheel locking device (there is a special tool ) then with a mark possion of steering wheel before removing retainer nut, next you'll need a steering wheel puller, reassamble in reverse order.
I believe that there are 2, 3, or 4 screws holding the bag assembly to the steering wheel. You can remove the screws from the back of the steering wheel. Be careful handling the airbag. Be sure to disconnect the battery completely, take the battery out of the car.
You do have to remove the air bag and steering wheel to replace the multifunction switch. You also have to remove the lock plate which locks the steering when the key is removed. this takes a special tool a ( lock plate remover / installer ) the lock plate is held in place by a small retaining ring , but the plate has a very stiff spring under it making it just about impossible to remove with out the tool, and if you get Lucky enough to get in apart i cane assure you you wont be able to get it back togeather with out the tool. If you have a friend who is a gm tech i am sure he will loan it to you or you can buy one for about 10.00 to 15.00 dollars at any auto parts store ..PS please be careful with the air bag just disconnecting the battery is not enough they also have a separate power supply unplug the yellow connector a the base of the steering column befor doing any work...Iknow this sounds like a lot but if you take your time and have the right tool i am sure you will do just fine Good Luck
You really should use a steering wheel puller some folks hit it with a hammer but that is so not good!!
Wheel pullers are cheap enough a single 1/4" thick plate steel with a 3/8" hole drilled on each end, one hole may be slotted, the length is about 4 " and its about 1 " wide.
You must remove the horn cover to gain access to the steering wheels center nut(approx. 3/4 " hex nut) that locks the wheel onto a splined shaft.
Remove the 3/4 nut and mark the spline shaft to the steering wheel with a light tap of a punch just to identify how the wheel goes back on the spline when you are finished changing out the wheel.
If a vehicle has an air bag attachment in the horn cover you must remove the air bag fuse from the fuse panel before servicing the steering wheel area, it could go off that is a very dangerous accident if the air bag deploys while you are over the top of it working.
Happy Motoring!!
air bag has bolts on the back of the steering wheel and to remove the wheel you will need a steering wheel puller but keep all of this because without the factory airbas it will not pass inspection
remove center cover and the center nut and you will need a steering wheel puller to get the steering wheel off and try this website www.autozone.com to see if they have your car listed and if you have an autozone near you can rent the puller from them
This will involve removal of your steering wheel and a couple of special tools, a steering wheel puller and a steering wheel lock ring compressor. If you have these are can rig your on, remove ground and wait ten minutes so the airbag system capacitor has time to discharge. Remove drivers air bag and detach wiring, remove steering wheel nut and notice align marks on wheel and steering wheel shaft and remember them. Remove the steering lockring retainer after compressing spring. from there you should remove Blinker stick, by turning shaft to line up to slot on hole and pull out, Remove clock spring and then switch, reverse to install. Hope this helps you some you can get complete instructions at www.alldatadiy.com, Hope this helps you and Merry Christmas!
it takes a special puller to remove the steering wheel. the air bag just pops out with a release tool in the release hole on the side of the steering wheel
