I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma SR5 manual trans. 4x4. I am changing rear tail lights and when I plug new lights in, the reverse lights won't work. They worked before I put the new lights on. I am really stumped at the moment. I checked all fuses in fuse box and none are blown. I hooked up a test light and when I put the vehicle in reverse, I am not getting a signal at the connector. I traced the wires back to the ECM, but I did not break the wire wrap seal yet to see if there are any burnt wires. Could it be the reverse switch?

A clunking sound is usually a universal joint that is going out. Check the joints by getting under the truck and trying to shake the drive shafts near the joints. The other cause could be the pinion (front or rear) has developed slack. You may see some slack at the pinion bearing of the axle housing when you shake the drive shaft.

Inside your truck bed at the rear corners there will be 2 holes at the top and bottom of each tail light. yes this can be done by yourself the truck should have come with a pigtail that will plug up under the dash to connect the controller to. if you did not buy the truck new or no longer have that pigtail you can buy them at the dealer they cost approx. $30. all of the newer trucks are prewired for the trailer brakes.
My truck did the same thing. I changed the plugs with the ones the parts store recommended and it still acted gutless. Then I took it to the toyota dealership and they told me the plugs were not the right ones. So make sure you have the right plugs with a couple different parts store. i guess there sensitive and not just any plugs will work. Do it yourself though cause the dealership will rape you. Stevenson toyota in Golden colorado sucks!
