1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Logo
Anonymous Posted on Sep 02, 2011

I took my recently purchased 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee to a mechanic for inspection. He lifted the veh and found the driver side front wheel was locked an the other side turned freely. He said I needed brake pads. Well, I raided the vehicle and removed the parts and discovered the brake pads were almost new. . no visible leaks. What would cause the wheel to lock up? The car had been sitting for about 8 months unused - could this have an affect? Thanks, Jim

I'm not following- on your 3rd point - there is no rust. I thought about the wheel bearings and there is no noise, etc. The caliper is just not retracting after releasing the brake pedal. I'll try the shifter and the transfer case to see if that makes a difference but I don't see how that would affect the brakes on All wheel drive. I try anything - I'm puzzled. . Thanks

A few things come to mind. First, If the vehicle is in 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, the transfer case may be the culprit. Try slecting Neutral on the transfer case & see if things change. Second, the front wheel bearing may be siezed up. It's a fairly simple replacement of the sealed cartridge. Third, this is a long shot but I've seen cases where the front axle shaft U-joints have caused the wheel to bind up if they are rusted tight.
Also, If you drove it to the mechanic, is the wheel really locked up, or is it only when it's parked? If only when parked, my first point makes the most sense.

Sorry I misunderstood. If the break caliper is not releasing, try removing the cyinders and clean any rust using steel wool. You may also have some air or debris in the brake line. Try bleeding the system.

Thanks, I will try that right now and let you know.

Hi,
I'd check your tires for balance, if they are out of balance, they may be vibrating enough to cause something in your suspension to make that noise.
Wheel balance is common arou 60-65 MPH on all vehicles.

Hello, it could any be number of things in the front suspension that could cause this. From control arm bushings & ball joints to bearings. I would have your Jeep put on a lift and given a good inspection before you do any more driving. I hope this helps.

I have 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 and I cannot drive it more then 50mph on the high way because starts to jump as if I have a flat tire it feels front right side and I have to stop then I can continue...

Typically it sounds like wheel balancing, although the speed at which it starts is just on the low side (normally 60-65 mph), but not impossible, and combine that with shock absorber problems it is quite possible.

Im am rotating tires on a 94 jeep cherokee the

Move the passenger side rear tire to the front, and passenger side front to driver side rear. Switch the driver side rear tire to the front and driver side front to passenger side rear. Repeat this "X" pattern each time you rotate the tires. Rotate the tires from side to side if the tires are different sizes on the front and rear.

This is the better solution. Hope helped (remember rated this help)

1994 Jeep Grand cherokee rear lift gate

Well My 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem and we had to just cut into the lift gate panel from the inside. It required cutting plastic but with a 94 looks arent everything and a working lift gate was worth it. But then we pealed back this black plastic mat under the panel and lifted up on the release bar(verticle bar that lifts the latch) and once we got it open we adjusted a little clamp that had slipped. Dont adjust it too much or when u lock it it wont lock! But sorry i dont know the name of the parts. But then u can screw the panel back in and it wont look to bad besides some cuts.
