IS THIS A SERPENTINE BELT OR AND INDIVIDUAL ALTERNATOR BELT? I'M GOING TO GUESS (ONE MAIN BELT)...SERPENTINE, AND THE TENSIONER IDLER PULLEY IS BINDING...NOT ENOUGH TO SMOKE THE BELT, BUT TO MUCH PRELOAD ON THE ALTERNATOR BURNING UP BEARINGS
No - your belt cannot be replaced without taking the fan off. More than likely, you also have multiple belts. You will have a 1/2 inch spot on most of the plates to tighten each individual component. Look for a place to attach a 1/2 inch breaker bar/ratchet next to the alternator, steering pump, smug pump, etc. These should all be v-belts on a 1984, not a true serpentine.
