Question about 1991 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Where is the power steering rack bolt located on a 91 honda accord? I changed my sway bar links this past weekend and found a bolt and washer laying in a covering under the steering gear wear the power steering lines are attached. I tried to see where it went but I have no idea. Can someone please tell me or show me a photo of where this goes? Thanks...

Never mind the text, I was trying to get the picture, three or four bolts. I'd have to look at it to be sure. The picture appears to show three bolts?

SOURCE: I'm trying to remove the front rotor from a 91

ok not sure the set up without seeing it but if it a floating rotor remove the caliper and braket that the caliper bolts to there will be to phillips screws holding rotor on in the front of rotor remove those and take rotor off. If you have trouble with those screws let me know. If it is a pressed on rotor witch alot of hondas have you will need a slide hammer and a piece that attaches to the end that looks like a ducks foot with four holes or the other one that is not flat but raised you can borrow them tools from autozone. Remove axle nut in center and washer. You see witch attachment will fit over atleast two studs where the lug nuts go (over one stud on one side an the other across not right next to each other) then put lug nuts on to hold the attachment on get them pretty tight. then screw the slide hammer in the center of the attachement screw in a good distance. Know for the fun part you might want to grab a rag slide the piece that slides with wrag wrapped around slide it close to the rotor **** it hard till it hits the end becarefull not to pinch your finger or hand then just keep sliding it close to the rotor and slam it back to the outer end hard some come off easy some take some work just keep hammering away at it. stop every know and then to check lug nuts to make sure they stay tight, you should notice if it is coming out or not dont give up it will come. Also becarefull when it comes off it could hurt you besure to stand on the side. Note, you dont have to remove rotor to remove axle. To remove axle you must remove center axle nut. Then you have to disconnect tie rod end, remove the cotter pin take off bolt use a tie rod seperator slide it in between the tie rod and hole try not to mess up rubber boot hit the end with hammer untill it pops free, then there might be three bolts underneath take those out, if there not there then just disconnect bolts that hold the steering knuckle to the strut take them out pull down you should now have enough room to push xle through if it dont slide out of the hole easy use a punch and hammer put punch in to hole at end of axle hit with hammer, I suggest spraying with wd40 if that dont free it up, take the axle nut turn it around backwards scew on till flush with axle end hit with hammer (do not damage the end) once it comes out you should be able to get to the four bolts. if you just need the rotor off dont worry about axle removal when you put the rotor back on it should go on enough to thread axle nut and tighten pressing rotor back on, before you do check the bearings(balls there should not be one missing put some high temp grease in there. tighten axle nut till rotor is flush all the way in it is best to use a air gun or it will be difficult. hope this helps. I will check this post to see if you run into a problem.

How do the sway bar links and tie rods relate? Or are they completely different?

A sway bar is mounted on the chassis and most times connected to the bottom control arm on the front. They control the roll of the vehicle when cornering.
A tie rod is the bar that goes between the steering rack or drag link and the steering arm. Tie rods are a part of the steering, all cars have tie rods while not all cars have sway bars.

How tough is it to replace the rack and pinion on a pontiac montana

It's a bit of a pain, but doable with simple tools.

Loosen the front lug nuts. Jack up the van and support it on the rails just behind the front tires (not the sub frame as you need to lower that a few inches). Remove the front tires. Disconnect the sway bar link pins, and the sway bar mounting bolts. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Support the rear ends of the sub frame, and remove the bolts mounting it to the van. Once the sub frame bolts are out, lower the rear end of the frame. I did this by using a jack, and placing the jack stands a couple of inches below the frame. Remove the sway bar from the van. You may need to drop the rack a bit more, but be careful as the steering shaft is still connected. You should be able to get at the bolt that attaches the rack stub to the steering rod by pushing up on the boot. Remove the sub shaft bolt. Disconnect the power steering lines from the rack (at the rack). Un-bolt the rack from the sub frame, there are two bolts. The rack should be able to be removed from the drivers side of the van. I replaced the tie rod ends and the sway bar bushings when I replaced mine (new link pins are easy at this time too). The installation is reverse of removal. I measured the tie rod distances when I put the new ends on. The only change I made was that I tied the steering shaft boot down onto the rack so I could install the bolt. I couldn't push the boot up high enough to get the bolt back in. Be sure to install the new power steering line seals that should come with the rack (buy new ones if it doesn't) - the lines are different sizes so you can't mix them up. Torque everything to spec when reinstalling (the cheap Hanes manuals have what you need along with these directions!). It's easiest to install the sway bar brackets when the sub frame is hanging down. Once it's together and running, check the power steering fluid. Get an alignment immediately (I set mine up before I changed the rack).
One last bit of advice, buy the rack with the longer warranty, you don't want to do this twice.

I replaced both sway bar links as well as the bushings this past summer and things are still quiet. I had the same clunking noise as well when going over bumps (Drives you crazy!). Did you try changing the bushings as well? They are $16 for a set of Moog bushing at O'Reilly's.

What tools are needed to replace the front sway bar links on a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan? It's FWD. The parts are called sway bar repair kits.

I just changed mine this weekend. You need an 18mm deep socket for the top of the link as well as a T40 Torx socket. You will need a 18mm regular socket for the bottom of the link.

Front sway bar on a 2000 monte carlo

Be very carefull because there are lines and wires that can be broken if the engine is lowered too far. Disconect the battery. Set the parking brake and chock the rear tire.
Put the car on jack stands and take off one of the tires. Put the jack under the rear of the engine cradle. You have to loosen the steering column set screw at the steering rack and loosen the two front bolts that hold the engine cradle to the chassis. Take the two rear cradle bolts almost all the way off and lower the cradle until you can wiggle the sway bar out. The steering will disconnect.
Reverse the procedure to put everything back where it belongs. The steering shaft is a "D" shape so it only goes on the rack one way. Tighten the set screw and torque the engine cradle to the required specification. 133 ft. lb.
IMPORTANT -- Take the car to an alignment shop and have at least the front aligned. The front suspension is attached to the cradle and can be moved out of alignment.
Complete instructions are found in Haynes Manual p/n 24048, chapter 10.

How to install rack and pinion bellow boots on 1991 honda accord

Inside the boot toward to rack (inner tie rod) there is a washer that has to be removed. Then you'll be able to see the wrench contact area that has to be removed to release the inner tie rod from the rack. Then just put it all back together, don't forget the washer lock. Turn the steering wheel as far as it will go according to which sides you're working on at the time to get the most comfortable access.
