1996 passat manual trans started and drove fine this morning, but when I went to start it to leave this afternoon nothing works. Wont turn over nothing. tried jumping it, then disconnected battery and rehooked it up still nothing. when the key is turned on all dash displays turn off but when key is turned off dash displays come back on

Check your battery cables for tightness, especially your ground cable. Now you have a new battery, so you have eliminated that as the source of the problem. Turn on your headlights, do they go out or very dim when attempting to start the car? If so, you have a poor electrical connection somewhere - loose cable, bad cable, possibly bad ignition switch.

Hi there ... how old is the battery? it could be that the battery is not holding a charge anymore therefore when you park the car and get back in in the morning , the battery is dead. If the caps on the top of the battery are removable, take them off and check the fluid level in the battery. If the battery is new, You might have a current draw from an electrical device in the car (ie.... a light that is constantly on ) in that cased you may want to take it to a shop and have them put it on a computer and have them check for the current draw cause chasing something like that can take forever. My suspision though is the battery. Hope this helps you out.

Hi

Either your battery has just given up the ghost,........ Is it the original, and now 10 yrs old ?
Or your Alternator is not charging enough, to replenish what is used.

Have battery tested first, if OK, then the alternator belt tension, and alternator for correct output charging rate.

If all these shows no faults, your starter is then suspect.

Check for a loose connection on your ignition switch. I have had similar problems with my 93 Passat.

Sounds like the battery or a short in the battery line. The VW alarm will come on if you disconnect the battery. Use a voltmeter (or mutlimeter) to check the battery voltage (red lead on positive pole; black on negative; range on 0-50V). When car is not running, you should see 12V; when car is running, you should see 15V (if the alternator is working). You can also test the battery charge by turning on the headlights. If they brighten when you rev the engine or if the dim when you turn on other electrical accesories, then it is likely the battery.

tell individual working on it to check the crankshaft sensor voltage and signal when it wont start also check the fuel pressure and cam sensor, these are all possible problem with that particular car. it also has wiring issues that an expert tech would have to diagnose

2 ideas , your battery and your starter is of concern,because you stared it and was able to drive it home leaves me to know that the alternator does charge, starter clicks,sounds like battery going out ,have the battery replaced and by the way make sure a clean battery connection are nice and clean

Started up this morning fine went and did not start at all later.

remove and, clean your battery cable clamps then retighten and, test.
If your battery is too discharged "jump" it using jumper cables and, another car.
