I have a 1997 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3L Vortec V6. It will turn over but won't start. It's getting fire and fuel. All the dash lights come on when the ignition is turned on and you can hear the fuel...

On the vortec engines they require 56 pounds of fuel pressure to start a few pounds shy of that you have a dead vortec you will need a fuel pressure guage to verify

98 gmc jimmy only start when primed at the throttle body then runs fine until shut off then needs to be primed again to start

This happened to me I had to spray Starting fluid everytime eventually. Starting fluid wouldn't work after awhile. Its the fuel pump. Even though it comes on and works its not producing enough fuel pressure to start the engine. It's probably giving about 12-13lbs of pressure but it needs atleast 14lbs. of pressure. And a word of advice to buy a ACDelco original fuel pump if you don't want to have to replace it again in 1-2 years, it's more expensive but will last.

1998 gmc jimmy 4.3 vortec starts and runs but shuts down when reaching operating temperature.

Your fuel filter may be at it's life time and will need to be replaced. Start with the simple and replace that, the other thing also that would cause the engine to shut down would be a faulty oil pressure sending unit. What is the oil pressure on the dash when the engine shuts down. You need at least 8 PSI to have the engine stay running. Check your Fuel pressure at the shredder valve and you should be 62-65 PSI with the engine not running and fuel system energized, once the engine is running it should drop about 5PSI. The last thing that could cause this would be a bad ICM, once the ignition system heats up the ICM fails and the engine shuts down. A mentioned, start with the simple and replace the fuel filter and check your fuel pressure to ensure your fuel Sending unit has not gone bad and will need to be replaced. Good luck and keep me posted.
