I checked battery and connections and installed a new ignition switch prior to contacting this forum. I bought the car used and although the car fax doesn't list any accidents or other problems, I feel it was at one time involved in a flood, due to the look of rust on the undercarriage and parts of the engine.

I've already replaced the ignition switch, prior to contacting this forum, Under the advise of the professionals at AutoZone and O'reilly's. I believe the car has been involved in a flood although the car fax doesn't list it. It has dirt and sand in unusual places in the engine and undercarrage.

'It's a 97 ford taurus, purchased used has "67500 original miles". Battery cables have been cleaned, checked and the battery has been tested to be good. However, you make it sound as though the battery may not be putting out enough juice, and if that's correct, the voltage could be causing the problems. Is this correct? If so, would that make the fuel guage and the speedometer operate improperly?

Hello
What is the year and the model? Have the battery cables been cleaned and checked to make sure you have a good connection? Has the battery been load tested on a battery tester? Based on all that you say you have a low voltage problem, if the battery hasn't been properly tested do so, any Autozone will do it for free.

A defective battery will cause the gauge's to act erratically for sure. That is a classic symptom of low voltage problems.

I would start with the ignition switch. The horn and interior lights are two different problems. Lets get it started first. The rest points towards the switch. These are easy. remove the steering column bezel. 3 or 4 screws on the bottom. pops off. Two screws to remove the switch. These may be torx screws or bolts so be prepared.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
It can be a disconnected or loosen battery connectors. As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you tighten the negative battery connector. Please do check the body ground to the body as well. If possible add more body ground and observe how it goes.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Well it may have been flooded before. If that's the case, you may need to replace the PCM (powertrain control module) to resolve the problem.

What happens when the onboard computer on a 1998 Hyundai Elantra goes bad?

That wouldn't be a computer problem , maybe be the ignition switch . If you don't know how to test automotive electrical circuits , viewing wiring diagrams an using a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter your best bet , have a qualified repair shop check it out . More then likely just a electrical connection problem , Voltage drop testing on main power circuit's is what needs to be done.
Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb/ Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine . Under system click on electrical distribution , then under subsystem click on power distribution . Click the search button then the blue link. Start at the beginning testing battery connections , cables . Power supply to the fuse boxes ,to the ignition switch , an from the ignition switch. There is battery voltage to the ignition switch ,hooking up a test light or voltmeter to that main battery power feed an turning the key to run start etc... does the light go out or stay bright ?
Check out put from the ignition switch , start , run circuit's

92 Toyota 4runner truck was running perfectly fine Later in the day went to start and the alarm just started going off and wouldn't turn off. Truck won't start even with keys turned in igniti

The alarm system somehow got activated , this is usually because the battery becomes discharged or disconnected try doing this:
Remove the key from the ignition
disconnect the negative battery terminal
put the key back in and turn to ON
exit the truck and leave door open
reconnect the battery terminal
get in and leave door open, if the alarm horn stays off it should start.

Truck won't start but the horn honks when I turn the key.

Sound like a wire loose. could be the earth cable to the engine, or the main power cable from the battery to the fuse box/ignition switch/starter.

My plymouth breeze won't start, won't make a sound, but my lights and horn still works , help me.

any real answer yet? did the problem ever get resolved? i have the same problem with my sister's car. too cold to diagnose tonight, but will post the solution probably tomorrow. since the lights and heater works, but ignition and radio arent getting power, my first guess is there's probably a fried fusible link which controls the 2nd accessory power to the ignition switch. will post a solution soon.

2003 - RX300 I'm tring to change the battery, when I connect the negative terminal, the horn blows and won't stop... I've turn the key to start and nothing happens, the horn keeps blowing.......

I would check to see if this is a relay problem for the horn. Remove the relay for the horn and see if you can swap it with another to confirm it is bad. If with another relay it doesn't stay on you no it was just a relay so go get a new one. The only other thing could be a security issue and when you discharged the power by unhooking battery the vehicle is acting like it has been broken into. But i would say it's a relay problem. Good Luck.
