I have a 2001 xterra, and recently some intermittant problems arrises. Occasionally when the ignition switch is turned on, it is completely dead (no starter, no power to acc). Battery checks out OK, and then later the switch works fine, but I also notice that when the key is on and working, when I use the window switch, the seatbelt and brake icons flash on while operating the window switch. Also the brake light wants to remain on although all brake components appear OK. Obviously some sort of bad connection or short, but my question is: is this set of problems caused by a bad switch itself or by some sort of electrical component/wiring harness controlled by the switch being defective.

SOURCE: My 1999 nissan altima won't start, no crank, not

If you look under the hood, there is a starter relay that might be the problem - but more common than that, - Do you have an alarm system of anykind? If so, It sounds alot like that is the problem, and they are notorious for causing "no start" problems as such - Unfortunatey, the wiring for these (even to just remove one) can be rather involved (as they often cut the starter wire to install an interrupt) so you may have to take it to an auto electric shop, or one that specializes in alarm systems - Also, dealers sometimes install special "electronic lot key systems" in all of their new cars, requiring that the "electronic key" must be present in the vehicle (along with the correct physical key) in order for it to start - I'd check for one of those systems as well - Hope that helps...

Intermittently there is a problem starting the car. The key turns on all the electrics but when turned further it does not engage the starter.

Check your ignition switch electrical side
Check the relay
Or the starter motor itself must be playing up

You might want to check the distributor. Take the cap off and check if there is play on the rotor shaft. It's only supposed to turn, but if there's play when moving it back and forth, better you replace the distributor now. The 2000-2004 Xterras have a bad distributor shaft and the throttle positioner sensor is on the shaft. Just FYI.

Wont start intermittently

First thing I check for on a GM when it won't start, is the antitheft system. GM is notorious for these things failing. A dead give away is a light on the dash that says SECURITY or ANTITHEFT. If you see this light, go to this link.

If no security light, the problem is gunna be in the ignition, the starter, or the neutral safety switch. You can always jump the terminals on the starter (key turned 2 clicks forward), if it turns over at the starter, the problem is in the ignition, or neutral switch.

2001 xterra key won't turn

First have her turn the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key. Then if that does not work try moving the shifter as much as she can with the brake pedal depressed. If for some reason that does not work she will have to get it to a dealer. Good luck, dont forget to rate.
