My 2004 Chevy Trailblazer dies when I turn on the air conditioner

When I turn on the air conditioner my trailblazer dies. First we thought it was the battery. It started resetting itself every time it set too long. The clock would reset. Then it would start, but hesitate. Then final it wouldn't start at all. Then we had to jump it. Got a new battery. Now it starts. But when you turn on the air it dies. As long as you don't run the air it is fine. If you turn on the air while sitting or idling it dies. If you get the speed up or are driving it is ok, but if you are stoped at a light or just sitting it will die or if you are slowing down to turn with the air on it will die.

I have the same problem if I turn on my AC while stopped or idling my engine quits!

  • jamesthornej Feb 04, 2009

I unplugged the high pressure switch on ac and it still does it so I know its not the compressor, can anyone help?

We have the same exact problem with our 2004 Trailblazer. We did not have any problems until we changed the battery. We had people tell us that the it would be okay after it reset but that is not the case. Our mechanic cleaned the throttle body and that did not work either. It worked for maybe a couple of days then started doing the same thing again. Anyone find the solution to this problem?????

Just check weather all spark plugs are ok, even if one misfires then turning ac on will stop the engine. during motion the ac manages to get the power from other plugs. i hope this solves ur problm.

I have a 2005 trailblazer that did the same thing... replaced the fan clutch and it wrks beautifully. fan clutch will run you about $170.00 but it solves the problem. chevy started putting emergency shut down systems in models after 2001, when you kick on the air the fan needs to cool it and if the fan isnt working the ac could cause the engine to blow, therefore if the fan isnt working and you turn the sir on the system shuts the car down to prevent further damage.

Since this is sooo popular let me give the correct and only answer for this very common problem as I've typed many times on Fixit.
The answer is....your throttle body is dirty and if you clean it yourself,it's a $7 fix. After the battery was disconnected, computer used the settings as if everything were new and clean. Being we don't have a PCV our throttle body's muck up quickly. Unhook the battery again, take your throttle body off 4 bolts and you can reuse the hard plastic gasket. Use Seafoam or a sensor safe throttle body cleaner and a rag/toothbrush. Don't use wire brush, will scratch the aluminum. After both sides are squeaky clean, put the TB back on, and connect the battery back up. Before starting, make sure all HVAC is OFF. Drive around for 15 minutes or so, so the computer can relearn the correct setting for a clean throttle body. Very very very common problem with Trailblazers/Envoys/Rainers/Azsenders/Saab 9x7.

It happened with my 2005 Trailblazer and I figure it out. When I checked the vaccume hose that connected the upper engine compartment with the Carborator, I foud the hose is broaken. I replaced it with another tube and the engine after that works fine. for your case you may need to clean the idle and carborator compartment, specially if there is dirts exist.

Good luck

I had my battery changed on my 2004 Trailblazer at the auto parts store and after that it would keep stalling. I took it into a shop and they said that with this type of car, when changing a battery you need to use a backup memory saver. If you don't the car looses it's memory, most of the time when you start driving the memory resets and relearns everything. But in my case it did not and the mechanics had to reprogram it all. Was about $200 on top of the money for the new battery :( Hope this helps.

I have been driving it like this for about three weeks now. We just quit using the air conditioner. As long as we don't use the air it is fine. So I don't really know if it is ok. But since you said that I think I will check it out and see if it stil does it and I'll let you know. We basically just drive with the air. Until we decided to have it checked out.

SOURCE: Why does my 2005 trailblazer turn off when I turn

check the volt meter when you turn on the heater or AC,
it could be that the alternator is just putting out enough to run,or the AC clutch in the compressor is seizing up loading down the engine, the AC will cycle on and off if your heater is set to defrost

For the stalling issue, the throttle body needs to be cleaned, grime in this area prevents the throttle plate from closing completely and allowing air to enter, making the air/fuel mixture lean.
The dead speedometer could be a bad stepper motor in the instrument cluster or a bad speed sensor on the transmission. If the cruise control is not working, the problem is most likely the speed sensor.

Typically, you have a vacuum issue, air flow system is designed to FAIL in the defrost mode, so no vacuum, doors are spring loaded to blow out defrost ports.
