Many times this type of issue is caused by the motor that changes the transfer from 2 to 4 wheel drive, they get stuck, another issue is dirty fluid, have you had the transfwer case serviced?

if the car is all wheel drive you will have to engage center diff lock
if ordinary 4 wheel drive there will be no problem because if you have it in 2 wheel drive high it is the same thing as having no front drive shaft installed
That truck has an electric motor that controls the transfer case, It's a couple hundred dollar part tho. See if you can hear it run when you shift it in. It's right on the transfer case. Could even take it off and turn the shaft by hand to get the range you want.May not be the transfer case itself.
Smetimes these can be difficult to get out of 4 low. Put the vehicle in neutral and the switch in 2 wheel drive. Give it a minute to shift. If it doesn`t move the vehicle about an inch and try it again. I had an 03 dakota and an 02 durango and they were both like this.
You need to check the cv joints in the front end or the u joints in the front drive shaft.If none of the above then the problem is internal in the front diff.
