Hi, I have a 1996 Audi A6. My problem lies with the engine misfiring from time to time. Sometimes a rev will get her going and other times not. Have found that no spark is coming from cylinder 2&5. The spark leads have been swapped around and work perfectly. However I have had the coil pack changed and ICM changed. Each time the car comes back from the mechanic she is fine, however the next day she goes back to misfiring. Your help is appreciated!

SOURCE: Audi A6 Misfires

You may have a coil pack going bad. They're on the front top of the engine - you'll see them if you follow the spark plug wires back. Do you have any codes from having the engine scanned? If you can get it scanned (AutoZone will do it free), post the codes up and we'll see which cylinder(s) are misfiring. From there, you can swap coilpacks around and see whether the misfires follow the packs or stay in the original cylinders. If they move, you have a bad coil pack or two. If they don't, since you've already changed plugs and wires, I'd see about having the injectors diagnosed to see if any of them are failing.

SOURCE: detected a cylinder 2 misfire on 02 audi a6

Chances are you have a faulty spark plug on cyl. no. 2. If new plugs are in the budget this would be a good starting point. Use a quality plug from your local "auto house" e.g. NGK. For futher pinpointing you can move the suspect plug to a new cylinder location and see if the code comes up for that cylinder.

SOURCE: I got audi a6 2.8 lit. The engine misfires

I have a 1999 A6 2.8, and my car was doing the same thing. However, after spending about a $1,000.00 I took it to another dealership. they replaced the fuel filter, it was dirty from putting cheap 91 gas in the car. Once it was replaced the car ran like new. I had to replace it around 80,000 miles. Hope this helps

SOURCE: Misfire on cylinder 4 only when accelerating

Try a compression test. You could have a bent valve or a bad ring on the piston. If the compression test shows it to be much lower than the other cylinders then its a mechanical problem. The valve may not be seating or a weak spring isn't allowing the valves to close and its leaking under load.

SOURCE: 2004 Audi A4 misfire

it is always a good idea to stay with o.e.m parts and yes there is updated parts in the newer coils. and yes the M.A.F will also cause misfire faults but will not make check engine light flash or make car shake and shudder. also check you wire harness going to your coils make sure your ground wires are not cracked. That could be the main culprate. good luck hope this helps

Help with my 2002 Audi A6 ASAP

It could also be an ignition sensor, mine went out and the car kept misfiring. Once I had it replaced that took care of the misfiring issue.

Misfire

Exhaust timing is camshaft not ignition. And for all 6 to be out would mean that the cam would seem to have slipped a notch.

How to install a timing belt on a 1996 Audi A6. What is the timing?

Hi

If you are not familiar with the timing I would not recommend you doing the work yourself, this is a major job to a novice. The timing keeps the engine in sync so that nothing contacts each other, the pistons and the valves, cam etc all have to do there job at a set time within a split second, a mistake on timing can result in complete enegine failure and meaning in most cases new cylinder head, new belts, tensioners, pullys, water pump, gasket etc etc etc.

I would get it into a garge as it is a staright forward task for them although does take a few hours and is often quite costly because of this. average price for a regular car is £225 for an Audi it could be more like £400 thats assuming you are in the UK.

1996 Audi A6 It's hard to start

Sounds like the timing is getting out of sync. Check the belt for worn teeth or loose ness.
