Hi Tony, If the car ran out of fuel the fuel rail will be empty. Pressurized fuel must fill the rail before injection is possible. The pressure of the fuel in the rail should be somewhere around three point eight bar. Crank the vehicle for about forty seconds at a time and then allow the starter to cool. Repeat until the car starts. A better method is to identify the fuel pump relay, remove it and bridge the switching connections, but that can be dangerous unless you have a knowledge of electrical circuits. Regards John

Sounds like fuel pump is running but can not produce enough pressure. try pressurizing the tank with compressed air(may have an air lock) and if that doesnt work consult your local jag dealer for tips before you replace the fuel pump....

Car Technical Problem

When was the fuel pressure regulator checked or replaced? What about the gas cap? Did you ever change THAT? Gas caps are pretty cheap, and pretty much "do it yourself" items!

My car keeps cutting out as if its run out of fuel even tho its got a full tank of fuel

have the fault codes read and look for a problem EVAP system not venting the tank ( opening the gas cap to put in fuel is allowing the tank to vent until the next time)
never on fuel lights as they are only an indication and can be off

Is there an easy way to drain an X trail fuel tank

No easy way really, the best way is to get hold of an external electric petrol pump, put this inline before the diesel lift pump (With plunger on top in engine bay) and run a hose from this into a container, you then supply power to the pump and wait for it to drain, Make sure you tow the truck to a gas station and fill it completely with diesel to dilute any remaining residue of petrol to avoid engine damage and make sure you don't rev the vehicle as soon as you start it, leave it to idle for ten mins or so to avoid injector damage.

Run out of petrol, put petrol in wouldnt start, put jump leads on still not start, fuel dont seem to be goin through, is there a cut off switch, its a rover 25 il

The first thing you might want to check is to see if the fuel pump is still working. Running out of fuel is not a good thing especially with the in tank fuel pumps they tend to burn out when you run out of fuel.

of your discription the clicking you can here is a relay and if this coincides with your starting problem i suspect this relay operates the fuel pump which brings us to the second part of the problem how full is your tank as fuel tanks have baffles in them and if your parked up hill it seems likley the petrol wont be getting over the baffles hence no petrol getting to the pump which means the relay would be working over time and thats what you can here hope this helps yates210456
