Buying a solenoid without a starter is the same as buying a hamburger without the bun. The solenoid sits on top of the starter in a GM and they come out and go in as a pair. If you go in to buy a new starter it should have a new solenoid already on it. Replacing one without the other pretty much guarantees that you will be doing this job again a few months down the road for the part you didn't do this time. Hope this helps.

Want start have no lights on dash

Sounds like a bad starter connection, but it could be any number of things.

You need three things for a car to run - spark, fuel and compression. Confirm you have spark (check the battery for the necessary cranking amps for your car, check to ensure you don't have any fouled plugs/wires), then go from there.

1993 volkswagon passat VR6 wont start

Sounds like a blown fuse or wiring problem.
A mechanic would check to see if the starter will crank with power direct from the battery, then look for power to the starter from the key switch.

Wont start. Starter tries to engage but theres a "whirring" noise instead of the car starting

Sounds like starter solenoid is failing to kick in. The whirring is most likely the starter motor turning, but the teeth aren't engaging on the flywheel ring gear due to failed solenoid.

OK the starter has bushings in either end of the starter which the armature rides in, if those bearings are worn out the armature will drag on the fields and wont start the starter will need to be replaced
