97 Mustang gt starts but dies 5 seconds later. ( engine is a 4.6L, trans is a 5 speed standard.)
I have replaced the spark plugs, intake manifold gaskets, IAC valve, EGR valve, cleaned the injectors. I have found out the injectors lose there ground 2 seconds after the engine starts. I can keep the car running by cycleing the key back and forth and by hard grounding the injectors but then the engine floods. I ran a code reader on it and came up with nothing. the theift light is off and does not flash. I checked the bulb to be sure it worked and it is fine. the Car has had flood damage before. I have a new PCM that arrived at my house today that i will try after work to see if that solves the problem but just in case. any ideas?

Man it sounds like you a pretty experianced wrench!
I have solved some of thes electrical gremlins with putting good ground cables fron the engine to the chassis. The electronics get happier with a solid ground
Hi I too have a 96 mustang GT. Congrats on your new car!
Ill stat with the mechanical problem. If it seems to be stuttering under hard acceleration it is likely in need of new spark plugs, wires, and blasting caps (or distributor caps... seems to vary in name from manufacturer to manufacturer.) This is the most likely solution and the cheapest even though a full swapout will run you about 300+ labor if you cannot change spark plugs yourself. It is very possible to do but you shouldn't undertake the project unless you are prepared and knowledgeable. Other problems could stem into needing to replace the intake manifold and could possible be linked to a exhaust manifold leak although this would be more prevelant under all throttle positions.
As for driving standard remember that it will take time. I honestly recomend swithching the stock shifter to a aftermarket short shifter if you havent already. The stock shifters in the GT's are very long and quite vague. Americanmuscle.com has a shifter i can really recomend which costs about 90 dollars with the gasket. I recomend it because it is the cheapest option and being 17 doesnt generally come with a lot of money. Actually mastering maunal transmissions takes time that all. Just make sure that you are smooth with the gas and clutch during shifting and make it as fluid as possible. Remember that you are matching the revs of the new gear with the speed of the engine (so if your doing 50mph in third your revs are roughly 2600, when you shift for fourth your revs will be 2000) To make the shift as smoothe as possible and to start to understand your transmission you can always try to let off the clutch when the revs fall to 2000. Once you start thinking about shifting the skills to rev match downshifts, heel and toe, and even powershift will come in time.
Hi
My son has a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT and has had the same exact problems, stalling out at a roll and then it got worse. Sometime it wonāt restart for 5 mins.
We did these repairs new spark plugs & wires, New PVC valve because we found oil in the up intake manifold, removed and cleaned the upper intake manifold and throttle body, mass air flow sensor, etc. ran better but not fixed.
Than a few days later it completely died and wonāt start. While testing all of the sensor on the throttle body I realized it was cranking fine but it wouldnāt kick over! I checked for spark, It was weird we had no spark at the plug now.
We replaced the whole Ignition coil and the problem was solved, $139.50 at the dealer parts department. We changed it in about one hour.Advance was $165.00 and Auto Zone was $159.00.The dealer was cheaper for once and an exact OEM replacement.
Itās been 2 weeks and the car runs better with more power than it has for awhile. apparently the coil was going bad slowly than dies totally.
That threw us off a bit.
This is the fix but make sure you check to see if you have oil in your upper intake manifold which when is sucked in can cause a stall out.
clean the upper manifold and change the PCV valve.
good luck.
have you tried resetting the computer if not just take the battery cables off for about 5 minutes (i know kills the radio stations you set and resets the clock)but it resets the computer.try this option and see if this fixes your problem 10 min work. also if im not mistaken thats the same engine thats in a plymouth and dodge neon thanks jeff
Make sure the inside of your throttle body doesn't have a gunk build up. If so, clean in out with some carb. cleaner really well. If the crack is plugged up in the throttle body, air cannot get into the engine at idle in which the car will die. Are you running an aftermarket cam? If you are, drill a 5/32 hole in the center of the lower half of the throttle plate in the throttle body. This helps a great deal as well.
