You must turn the key forward 2 clicks until right before it would normally start. Leave like this for ten minutes. (No less) Roll the key back to regular position wait 5 seconds and repeat process. This must be done 3x in a row without starting in between. Whole process should take 30 minutes. After last ten minutes, roll back, count to five, then try to start your car. If this doesn't work, there is a way to bypass the system and never need that special transponder key again. This link explains. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

How to program key fob GM/L:22733524

Since you have a Malibu, you have to take it to a Chevy dealer. They have a hand-held computer they plug into your car to activate the BCM ( body control module) to go into programming mode to accept the new transmitter. Probably cost around $50-$60? You can call them for an estimate.

Once a new key is programmed, will an old key still work in a 2005 Chevy Malibu?

Not sure about Chevy's, but when my husband lost his keys for his Ford, he got a new key programmed, and when he found his "lost" key, it still worked. Try it. Don't think it will hurt it if it doesn't work, but check with a dealer.

I lost my 2005 Chevy Malibu key. Does the key program the car or does the car program the key chip? Once programmed, can an old key still start the car

Unfortuneately the key has to be programmed to the car. the old key wont work unless it is also reprogrammed at the same time the new key is programmed.

Help lost key

They key has a compter chip that inplanted in the key. A dub key wouldn't work. Take your title or registration with some form of picture id to any GM dealer and the would be able to make you a key. It will cost a few bucks, prices vary.
