I have a 03 mazda 6 that the accelerator will surge up to about 3500 rpm and will not idle down when stopping at a light. It starts doing this after running about 20 minutes. If I kill the engine and restart it, it runs fine for a while. Do I need to replace a sensor or fuel filter or what?

Possibly you iac sensor idle air control.disconnect battery for about 10 seconds replace .start car lift idle speed up to 2500 rpm it will revat that then revs will lift up then drop..that should reset your iac sensor.

Have it scanned for fault codes as an indicator of the problem. If the throttle valve is gummed up, cold temps can cause it to stick. But diagnose first!

SOURCE: wants to stall at idle.

Here is the most common cause of this stall, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: engine surging , won't accelerate over 3000 rpm ! IS chocking is like is not enogh gas

Do you have a check engine light with this?
What can happen is a code has caused the engine to protect itself. For example in a low coolant situation when the engine heats up too much, the engine can Knock causing an Engine Knock fault.
If that occurs you will recieve a fault for each of these items. Fill the engine with coolant. Then reseting the code will let your engine accelerate normally.

SOURCE: poor acceleration while trying to pass and check engine light on

You said it struggles between 2500 and 3000 RPM. checking the hose for vaccuum at idle won't work. Rev the engine to the problem RPMs and check. That will tell you about vaccuum. As for where it goes, it won't go in the same palce as the brake booster. There will be another connector. If the re is a T there now, it sounds like someone else may have changed things around.

Buick Lesaber, Lower then 1800rpm most time runs fine, Once in while surges high rpm's like driving fast 1900 & above rpm bucks /2100 smooth's out.

Need to take to a shop with a GM tech 2 or higher scan tool. These tools can actually display various sensor readings and voltages in real time and can be used while driving the car to recreate the issue. These are super expensive scan tools so most shops don't have them. Call around or bite the bullet and have a dealer do it. The money you spend on a correct diagnosis will be saved by not throwing random parts at it based on guess work.

2003 passat surging at idle and take off at low rpm's . NO surging at idle if in park.. only when car is in gear. major acceleration hesitation when starting up from stop lite... once rpm's up to 20k...

First clean the throttle intake butterfly with wd40 and a cotton rag and lightly brush wd40 onto the left and right bush(where the plate swivels on) this is the fat black pipe on the right of the engine in front. Are your spark plugs ok,air filter?.Dont forget the fuel filter at the back under the axle(covered with plastic undertray).

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a

this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.
